Post subject:  Getting into 4x4ing.....how to tow my CRD

Hi all. After having the CRD for 4 years now and doing progressively more interesting bush trips I have never looked into towing/wiching my CRD from the front should I get stuck. In a couple of weeks im heading out to do something more challenging and figured I should work this out since we are taking a tacoma along as a buddy vehicle. Can the Liberty be pulled from the front in stock configuration or am I going to need to head out and spend some money? On the back I have a 2" hitch so that should be fine for pulling.....just need to figure out the front.

Thanks all
Brett

I'm not quite clear on your question. If you mean towing the CRD as in pulling it like a trailer behind another vehicle driving down the highway then you need to look at the instructions in the Owner's Manual and acquire an appropriate dolly or tow bar. If you mean towing like pulling it out of a mud hole you got stuck in then yes you can use the hitch in the rear and you can get a pair of OEM tow hooks that bolt to the "frame" under the front bumper and are suitable for attaching a tow strap or chain. Of course you can go the big $ route with a new front bumper and winch.

A front tow bar mount will also offer you a solid connection point for chains / straps as well, but if you wanted a winch mount, you would have to get a bit creative to connect that to the tow bar mount points.

Look for "Roadmaster" tow bars for the CRD, I had one on my CRD and it worked quite well.

yes, im meant towing it out of a mud bog.....not pulling it behind another car on the road.

Factory Mopar tow hooks for the CRD work quite well:

My only caution would be not to "jerk" with them. The're mounted firmly for a factory component, but if you treat them like a 3/4" shackle tab, you'll rip a hole in the lateral connection that bolts into your steel crossmember (i.e. the steel "bumper" under the plastic).

Lots of folks have used hitch receivers as shackles and simply through-drilled them and mounted them to the two existing holes in the front of the frame that the tow hooks use.
