This morning My wife was taking the Liberty to work when she made it 3/4 mile from the house. With no warning, the liberty made a soft cough and died, at which time it would would not start up again. When I arrived on the scene, the engine would not turn over. NOT GOOD. Lets back up a bit. Our Liberty CRD has 171,000. Timing belt changed at 98,000 miles. Along with all fluids. Used Rotella T 05-40 6T engine oil. Change every 6250 mile religiously. Being the Diesel Mechanic, Graduate of Oklahoma State Tech with a degree in Diesel and Heavy equipment (my background) I started to take the engine down. I must admit, I have never worked on such a small diesel, neat in one way, but a pain in the booty, in another. To make things short. The timing belt looked good. I'm down to pulling the head. Once I pull the head, and if the engine is still locked up, I'm going to pull the block. I figure that a complete overhaul will be needed. If any of you have any advice, I'm open to find out why this engine will only turn a little in each direction. Also where is the best place to find Engine parts, Kits etc. Jeepstert |

Uh-Oh... Parts can be found at idparts.com or vmdieselspecialist.co.uk Where are you located? There is a chance someone nearby can offer assistance or at least hold the beer while you bang on the engine. This could be bearing damage locking it up, or it could be that it swallowed a valve or a glow plug... There are any number of answers, unfortunately, you are doing what has to be done for all of them - pull the top completely off. Once you have the head off, consider strongly about using ARP head studs when you reassemble it. You can reuse the head gasket if it isn't damaged (and the problem is elsewhere) and theoretically reuse the bolts too... But I like the ARP studs for the precision in applying the torque. DO NOT USE the service manual's torque procedure for either the head bolts or studs. The factory 'turn this many degrees' method is based on the flawed premise that TTY bolts were selected. They weren't. The factory bolts DO NOT YIELD so you might as well use actual torque numbers with them. |

Thanks so much for the info! I'm located north of Lawrence, KS. I'm sure the DW will be more than happy to hold my beer. Then again, she might want to beat on the darn thing herself! |
