Post subject:  Semi Locked up CRD

This morning My wife was taking the Liberty to work when she made it 3/4 mile from the house. With no warning, the liberty made a soft cough and died, at which time it would would not start up again. When I arrived on the scene, the engine would not turn over. NOT GOOD. Lets back up a bit. Our Liberty CRD has 171,000. Timing belt changed at 98,000 miles. Along with all fluids. Used Rotella T 05-40 6T engine oil. Change every 6250 mile religiously. Being the Diesel Mechanic, Graduate of Oklahoma State Tech with a degree in Diesel and Heavy equipment (my background) I started to take the engine down. I must admit, I have never worked on such a small diesel, neat in one way, but a pain in the booty, in another. To make things short. The timing belt looked good. I'm down to pulling the head. Once I pull the head, and if the engine is still locked up, I'm going to pull the block. I figure that a complete overhaul will be needed.
If any of you have any advice, I'm open to find out why this engine will only turn a little in each direction. Also where is the best place to find Engine parts, Kits etc.

Depending on what you need IDparts http://idparts.com/catalog/index.php?fi ... ehicle=124 or there is at least one good supplier in the UK but I don't have the web address.

IDParts would be my first suggestion as well.

The other -> Google: The VM Specialist.

Or click here: http://www.vmdieselspecialist.com/

with respect to your background.
would turn over??
using the starter or using bar to manually move the engine?
is the tranny in neutral? wheels off the ground?
I'm these might seem simple questions but not answered in your post. and they make a difference.

why
tranny locked..engine tear down..not needed
tranny in neutral but cannot bar the engine over manually..hum!!! broken rockers..glow plug..something jambing the engine..tear down needed

not turn over..dead battery..weak battery..key switch problem..

-just some thoughts. from some who like to take things one step at at time...

Sorry about being late to reply. #2 piston shattered, liner gone. Of all things #2 Intake valve's
mushroom came off the stem. The head will either need to have some machine work done or replaced the verdict is still out on it. Now I'm tracking down parts. Is there a Complete engine gasket set, or gasket seal list for this engine. 2005 2.8L CRD That would be nice.

Unfortunately it seems there have been a number of similar failures:

Don't forget - I had 2 engines commit suicide too, failure #1 was cylinder destruction. Never had top end damage however.

Ouch. Sorry to hear of the damage to your engine. That said, I would imagine you being, um, better able to deal with the details of the matter than the average Joe.

Best of luck with it, and do tell us all you learn about this little motor.
