Well, our little CRD, new to us, is about ready for it's Oil change and i havn't a clue as to what type of oil to use in it. It's a little over 60,000, I've always used Rotela in my dodge so what should i use in this little liberty. I was thinking i read somewhere to use Mobil 1 but which Mobil one. What do you guy's use? What oil filter will give me the best service. Thanks!

Chrysler says only use Mobil 1 0w40 oil.

A lot of us are using Shell Rotella T6 5w40.

Mobil 1 also makes a TDT (Turbo Diesel Truck) oil in 5w40 that would be good, some here use it.

Some here use Amsoil 0w40, some like Royal Purple 0w40, some like LiquiMoly 0w40.

Insofar as Filters, a lot like the Napa Gold [Specifically Gold, not Silver or Platinum] 1516 or 1515 (Depending on if you want to do 6.4 qts or an even 7 qts with an oversized filter.) They are made by Wix.

Some like the Mobil 1, some even like Motorcraft.

In the end, get whatever leaves a warm, fuzzy, happy feeling in your heart when you put it in. I would recommend picking anything from the above list.

You need to start thinking about a timing belt change, and the sooner you get a GDE tune, the better.

Good Luck!

X2 on the rotella T6 synthetic 5w 40. It's good stuff. You can also put a wix 51515 oil filter and put in 7 full quarts. Stock filter leave you at about 6.4 quarts. Dip stick are not right as well. If you fill it to full line, you blow it out the Ccv until it reads in the middle of the two lines.

Don't listen Chrysler on the 0w40. This oil almost guaranteed to lighten your wallet and increase your knowledge of rocker replacement.

You can get away with 15w40 in summer months and any old cheap 5w40 in the winter. Change your oil every 5k miles and no need to worry about spending $$$ on high falutin Group IV or Group V basestock Synthetic oil.

With the money you save you can purchase:
(a) GDE Tune with EGR enhancement
(b) Crankcase Ventilation Filter
(c) Lift pump
(d) A real fuel head

That Delo LE 5w40 is good stuff and price is great also...perfect for 5k oil change intervals!

0w40 and 5w40 are both fine (synthetic). Either invest in a GDE tune or do the ORM and disable the EGR.

I think Hexus got it right on the head. he comprehensively and succinctly answered a very complex question of course the other comments are valid too.

Delvac 0W40 and Wix 51516 has worked well for me so far. There has been some hearsay, but I've never seen any conclusive evidence, that suggests that the use of certain oil weight results in premature rocker failure or other bad things to happen to your engine.

There are bigger fish to fry on this vehicle. I wouldn't sweat too much about the particular oil brand or weight that you use.

I don't really have much to add other than to say good turbo diesel rated oil and quality filters are important but in my opinion equally as important is the oil/filter change interval. Personally I would not go longer than ca. 6K miles between services. I know some go longer but I would not even consider doing so without doing regular oil analysis which to me is simply not worth the trouble but then I don't do that many miles per year.

Soot in the oil and intake seems to be the enemy of engine life and the 2 best things to do to combat soot are what's listed above combined with a GDE tune.

More people use OEM recommended Mobil 1 0W-40 than any other. I also use standard size filter. Fram TG or Mobil 1.

If you have no mods and a active EGR. Do not go over 5k between oil changes.

A SEGR kit or a GDE tune will stop the soot from the EGR. EGR soot has been proven to eat at the engine from within, will cause Rockers damage!

Good luck,
KJJET

I used a Wix 51515 this first time around, but I did some reading and read some excellent things about Fram's new Ultra filters. The XG8A is equivalent to Wix 51515/Napa Gold 1515. They are apparently on par with Amsoil filters for about half that cost.

Another Rotella T6 user here. I run it in everything and have been very happy with it so far.

Thanks for all the input on this that really helps in my decision. I think I'm going to go with the rotella T6. And take advice of changing oil sooner until I can do a tune on it. I have been running with the air flow switch unhooked and checking for codes with my hand reader. So far so good.
