Just did the timing belt on my new to me '06 CRD. Did it in the driveway, and only removed the cooling fan, fan shroud, pulleys and timing cover. It turned out to be the original belt and had 136K on it. There were fine hairline cracks all over it. Dodged the bullet on that one. I also replaced the two idler pulleys and the tensioner. Didn't do the water pump this time. I used the Crown tensioner, and compared to the original Litens, the original looked a lot better built. So, when the water pump starts leaking, I will probably replace with a Litens. I was on a strict budget this time and just wanted to make sure I was covered on the belt itself. I also didn't use any tools, just marked the cams, injection pump and crank with a Sharpie and made sure to keep all the marks lined up.

Mark-and-pray is the method you used, but if you didn't loosen the cams, then you should be OK with that method. I didn't change the water pump on mine either the first time. What I will say... I don't really trust Crown components at all. Give idparts.com a chance to sell you parts, you won't ever be unhappy with their service.

You certainly dodged a bullet on the belt itself - the last trip I did to replace belts for CRD owners, each belt looked in marginal condition, and ALL were because of the age. The rubber is looking REALLY dry and unhappy on these. When that rubber goes... The kevlar is unprotected and it doesn't stretch. It just FAILS without warning.
