Post subject:  CRD Poor Fuel Economy... Map sensor...egr valve...advice?

Hi Folks
New to this forum I am up here in Canada have an 06 CRD KJ with 245,000 km. We have has since 2009 like the jeep but getting 18 mpg roughly right now and looks like I can do better. When it was newer it returned slightly better numbers but I doubt I have seen over 21-22 ever and have done some huge highway drives in it (Calgary AB to Nova Scotia, Calgary to California etc.) I have been reading some older posts regarding fuel economy, wondering if anyone has a link to how to clean the map sensor, and what thoughts are on egr valve deletion etc. looks like a few people have used this technique. Running with a clean air filter, 0w 40 oil, 40 psi stock size tires, not sure on my fuel filter. egr has been replaced twice if that matters. any advice would be great and thanks. looks like lots of good info on here. Rod

Welcome Rod,

MUCH will be revealed by reading Sam's Noob guide (at the top of this very page. I used 'carby' cleaner for the MAP like the Aussies suggest. I use EHM and tune so I actually haven't looked at it for a while.

Many of us strongly recommend a GDE tune.

good luck

Rod,
I recently changed out the glow plugs on my '06 at about 90k miles (~130k km?). While doing so i got to see how badly the intake elbow was choked off from EGR gunk, since i bought it with 80k miles and the egr had been functioning the entire time. I cleaned that out (didn't mess with the head/intake) and after 7 or more tanks, it seems I picked up just under 2 mpg. I am thinking with almost double the miles and a functioning EGR your intake is a likely culprit.

You are going to take a hit with winter fuel, roughly 12-16%. As well there is a shortage of diesel throughout the prairie's. I have noticed a sudden decline as well. My thoughts are the quality of fuel has taken a hit in order to meet the demand. :2cents:

Rocker/Lifter wear is likely along with a thoroughly clogged (by this point) intake. Not to mention the Daimler-Chrysler tuning in the ECM leaves a LOT to be desired.

If you want 30+ MPG out of it you're going to have to go through some labor and get a tune.

My honest recommendation at this point would be to sell it and buy a gas 4x4, you'll be happier in the long run.

If you can't part with it (lord don't I know how that feels) then you're looking at new rockers/lifters, cleaning the intake completely, and a GDE ECO tune.

Approximately $1500 before labor because you might as well do the timing belt/etc while you are in there that deep.

Welcome Rod.
Two modifications had major improvements on my KJ fuel mileage: First and foremost, get rid of that EGR! :!: Block it off if you can or get a GDE tune ASAP, this will increase fuel efficiency. Second, open up that exhaust, if you can in your area, remove the CAT and choke point in-front of it and replace with a straight piece of 2.5" pipe and replace stock muffler with a free flowing Flowmaster or one of similar design. These two changes along with a PowerPuck moved my fuel mileage from the high teens up into the high 20's along with great improvements in power.... :-)r

It should also be noted that the 2006 tends to under-report the miles on the odometer. My 2006 will show 0.9 miles for every actual mile traveled. So, if the odometer shows I traveled 300 miles on 17 gallon of fuel, that would be 17.6 mpg. But in reality, I actually traveled 330 miles which works out to 19.4 mpg.

Another thing to consider is a faulty abs sensor. I think the odometer uses the right rear to calculate mileage. I know that if this sensor is bad, the odometer will not rack up any miles, and I would speculate that a faulty one could under report miles too.

The odometer is pretty easy to verify with a few highway miles (use the mile markers along the road) or with a gps (garmin).

It should also be noted that injectors do wear and put out more fuel as they get older. The fuel spray pattern also deteriorates as they get older too, which leads to poorer fuel economy. The quality of the fuel determines the amount of wear. But I doubt you have used that poor of fuel to cause significant wear at that number of miles ( roughly 145k miles). This is seen on over the road trucks with 500k miles or more.

The egr could be stuck open or not closing completely.

If it is not one of above, a couple tests would help pinpoint the actual problem: 1) compression test on all cylinders (requires pulling the injectors), 2) boost pressure (turbo actuator could be stuck, or you could have a hole in the intercooler). Take it to a shop that can perform these tests (you could install a boost gauge yourself for little cost).

Good luck and let us know what you find.

I had been struggling with poor MPG since I got my jeep . I started With 15 mpg and replaced old air filter map sensor ehm fuel filter to go upto 17 then I replaced my old sticking parking brakes and started using a injector fuel cleaner and conditioner Rev-x now it is 19 Mpg range with rev X I could hear the engine running smoother on cold nights but this is as far I have gone now to get GDE tune new rockers new injectors and exhaust it is big bucks I will tackle one item every 3 months or so...it is at 171K Kim's so 106 K miles.....hope this helps

You do not need new injectors, the ones there are pretty bomb proof, it is the tune that needs changed, not the injectors.

Srytrucker before you spend $s on anything else at that mileage has the timing belt job been done? If not it needs doing like now.

Otherwise when you say 19mpg. What type of driving (all city?) and how is the mpg calculated (EVIC or GPS corrected hand calculated) and are the tires the stock size? On stock CRD in town mpg typically runs 18-19 mpg and highway 27ish hand calculated GPS corrected - keep in mind the odometer can be off +-5% and the EVIC is often wildly inaccurate. Also different size tires can aggravate that inaccuracy.

19-21 mpg is normal for city driving pretty much anywhere in the Lower Mainland.....that is what I would get and I get much better mileage on the open highway. The trans canada parking lot before Abbotsford really does not count unless you are on it with no contruction late at night.

It has stock tires and timing belt & water pump were done when i first got it. It is my mistress and i have spent a lot of money to keep her happy and committed to spend more (ouch).
My typical runs are drive into Bellingham/Blaine (150 Km) and then around GVRD (another 200 Kms or so) .it is all calculated based on odometer which seems just about right..... i mean it is hard to catch 5% error on such a short drive during this past whole year i could not take it to freeway runs like on to Oregon or Cali and heading east I have gone as far as Abbey only. So these runs when done around 500 Kms on Odo i pump in about 16 Gallons that gives 18 and some fractions as mpg.
So there is hope for me there and i intend to find out the real hwy mpg after making a run into Portland sometime this month.
As far as injectors i really liked the jeep ran in summers and the racket on cold nights disgust me but i guess that is a diesel thing and part of the bargain my rev-X snake oil and Chevron LE keep things smooth in freezing conditions.
Thanks and keep :JEEPIN:

Best thing is to get the gde Eco asap, that not only gives you better mpg, but protects the engine by not letting egr gases in your intake. Then, check your tire pressure, go at least 40 psi. Odo can have 5% error easy. Do a Google maps distance and compare it with your odo. I know it's not easy if you go to Multiple destinations but try your best. Especially if you go a longer way. Winds effects mileage big time. Winter fuel also gives less mpg. I get about 24-25 mpg going back and forth to work on Highway moderate traffic and some city drive. But if I drive more aggressive I get 20-22. Highway long drives, not more than 75, I get about 30. With a gde Eco I bet you'd jump to 20+. I'd make the tune number one priority.

I recently cross checked my ODO against Google's My Tracks app. The ODO gave me 33.6 mi vs 35.8 mi for the gps. That is a 6.6% differential or ~1.8 mpg's at my current avg of ~27.5 mpg's. I know this is a short trip but it did not take very long for the GPS and ODO to show a solid difference.

i did the EHM, ORM, and AFE Filter and have noticed 1-1.5mpg increase. I noticed no benefit from the 195F thermostat.

Just for fun and to liven up the discussion, on long trips I have even noticed that the trip counter on the instrument cluster and the trip counter on the EVIC will actually diverge as well. I rely on my GPS for my mpg calculations whenever possible.

I actually got a GDE ECO tune and my mileage went down. I will also say that wind does kill mileage in these things in winter.

That's an understatement, our EVIC shows as high as 30MPG, hand calculated on that trip was 21MPG.

GDE Eco tune is next on our list now that we have done Timing Belt and Water Pump.

If you have a factory tune I would be ultra sure that the thermostat isn't messed up. My wife's CRD had a thermostat that was sticking open. The engine never came up to temp. And we all know what happens when the engine is cold! The viscous heater gets turned on and stays on.
It's probably the most obvious thing to check. If you temp guage isn't going to the middle, then you have a bad tstat.
Wife's car is fine now. That's all it was. Car has over 98K. Factory tune, I just be sure to drive it hard and spray the MAP sensor out with each oil change.
Darn thing is in the wrong place, VW was a bit smarter and put it before the EGR crap. It doesn't muck up. Which brings me off topic, how come we haven't figured out and made a kit to move him upstream of the EGR.

We had the EGR disabled instead.
