Mobil has introduced a full synthetic, diesel rated 0W-40 oil, but it is only available in Canada. I special ordered a 12 liter case from Schulz Lubricants in West Boylston, Mass. It was $93, plus $40 shipping, direct to my door from the Canadian distributor.

Anyone know of a more economical source?

Dollars to dounuts this is re-branded Co-op DMO 0w40 and has been available for quite some time. The Co-op Refinery in Regina has had a long standing relationship with Imperial Oil and produces numerous products for other companies. This is the only oil my Jeep and other diesel equipment has ever seen. Co-op DMO 0w40 gets excellent reviews UOA and VOA from BITOG. My local Co-op Agro sells it for about 5.63CAD/ litre in case lot.

Best bet is to contact the closest Co-op to you and ask for options.

There does seem to be a body of evidence that 0W-40 oils are part of the rocker wear problems that some owners experience. Having lived in Canada for half my life I get the need for low viscosity winter starting but there are other choices in sythetics in the 5W-40 grade which would not make much starting difference as is pour point that's really important and if you plug it in at home or work then it starts becoming irrelevant.

The new Delvac 0W-40 is a fully diesel rated oil and should handle soot better than Mobil 0W-40.

I'm not convinced about this one. I've seen these suggestions as well but you need to be a bit careful making casual observations when you don't understand the statistics. I don't know the real numbers but I suspect the vast majority of owners go by the book and use 0W40, let's say 80%. No if you randomly pick half a dozen vehicles with rocker failure there is a very real probability that they all used 0W40 purely because this is the prevalent oil.

You can't make a fair comparison with the Euro model which had a different oil spec because the EGR configuration is different and we all know what that can do to the oil.

The new Delvac 0W-40.......

Actually, it's not so new, Delvac 1 replaced XD3 about 3 years ago. I've been using it since they introduced it here and was using the XD3 before that. With the exception of the factory fill these are the only 2 oils that have been through my CRD. FYI it costs a bit over $100 for a 4x4 at my local wholesaler.
