What are your results with the aftermarket torque converters (tc) for those running full torque or hot tunes?
eco tunes don't count since they are limited in their torque at full lockup.
I got the new euro and am running GDE full torque and I,m fairly certain I'm still getting shutter. 16-1800 RPMs locked in 5th at approx 55mph feels like the whole rig is going to shake apart. I thought this was going to fix the problem! :banghead:
I may send the euro back and go with Sun Coast, I don't want this from my CRD. Are there any simple things I should trouble shoot before diving back into the transmission?
thanks

I have a Suncoast and have ran both the Hot Tune and Eco Tune FT without any issues.

That is the right speed/RPM/symptoms for TC shudder. "Euro" TC is MORE than adequate for MUCH "hotter" tunes than you have.

HOWEVER, I am concerned that with the numerous part number changes that occurred in the last 18 months, you may have gotten something other than a true "euro".

When the "euro" first became available in the US, you could ONLY tell if you had the right part by the markings on the BOX it came in! There was NO way to tell by looking at the TC itself. (Crazy, but true)

Your not even in the peak torque band at that rpm area, are you sure you don't have a stock TC?
I have the torqueconverter1 heavy duty TC and rarely notice anything more than abit of driveline grumble with my Full Torque tune.

I watched the guy order the EURO part so I feel fairly confident that the correct part was installed. They also put in a new pump and fully serviced the trans while they were in there. What sold me on the EURO unit was that GDE used it with their stage II kits.

Update: The U joints are shot so I'm hoping that does the trick! Guess they didn't like the extra torque. Test results to follow. Praying that the shutter feeling was related to that and not the torque converter (TC). I'm probably putting more stress on this 9 year old vehicle that its ever seen so working the weaker parts out of the system seems normal.

thanks! :-)r

keep posting your results with the aftermarket TC and high torque tunes.

Pulled a double axle trailer yesterday with two round bales of peanut hay for the deer and that made it easy to shudder with the Torque Converter locked up, both 4th and 5th, New TC getting shipped and under warranty. I'm wondering if I want to do this or just go with Suncoast and not worry about installing an ineffective part AGAIN!

U joints were shot and replaced but did not fix the shutter. They were making a sound much different than the cabin shaking feeling like I'm driving over a cattle guard or rumble strips on the highway.

how is your aftermarket TC holding up with a full torque or hot tune?

Suncoast is bulletproof imo, those guys are the best in my book, building torque converters for the big boys with Cummins that do racing has to say something about it! I've been driving with Suncoast for over 40k, no shudder whatsoever.

I have been running a Suncoast in my Dodge Cummins now for about 5 years now with well over 700 lbs. torque in lockup pulling a 10,000 load and no chatter or slippage. It is one bullet proof TC!
It was my third and final purchase before I found one that would hold the beast; wasted $1k on a TCI brand TC that supposedly was rated for 1k lbs. torque; did not last for one year before it started slipping and chattering. It hurt to lay out $1800 for the Suncoast in the box, but in the long run it has been worth every penny. :D

My Jeep CRD will be getting a Suncoast and new oil pump in March. I do not plan to test any others in hopes they can hold the torque! :2cents:
As always, buy what you feel is right for you...

Are you paying for the labor to R&R? I would strongly suggest you check the part number on the BOX the new TC comes in with GDE BEFORE installing it. Also post the number here, as well. You should have good results if the get the right component.

I have suncoast and love it. No shudder with hot tune and it has been beaten on some. Going good. I'd suggest the suncoast.

what part # did you order. I would like the suncoast but the price is so high. 695+75.core+97.00 ship + a shift kit. Then the new pump + install. How much more torque will the suncoast take over the RL037142AA. Are the damping springs bigger in the suncoast.

I seen a post a long time ago were the cut a euro apart and showed a suncoast . But have't been able to find the post.

Used part number 68037142aa. Replacing under warranty. Eating the cost of labor. I'm away from my jeep but having it fixed. Will report back with results. Ugh.

Change the fluids in the differentials and transfer case. Use synthetics.

New fluids reduced my shutter.

1,600 RPM - 317 lb./ft.
1,800 RPM - 330 lb//ft.

Not far off from peak torque output in those ranges.

No synthetics in my gears, dyno oil only, atf-4 in transfer case and friction modifier in the rear for the CRD's LSD. U-joints replaced. New fluid at proper level in the transmission. Actually all fluids have been changed in this jeep except for the power mirror fluid.
I'm hesitant to add something to the ATF because I would like a functional part, not a bandaid for the shudder.

Yes I'm sure, they replaced the pump while the trans was off.

Its not all about peak torque, but rather the high torque of diesels at the lower RPMs when the TC is rotating more slowly and needs the larger springs to lock up and prevent shuttering (i think). Infact I can sometimes accelerate through the shudder as the RPMs get higher it occosaionally goes away.

GDE's use of these EURO mopar TCs with their stage II turbos is what turned me onto them. Hoping I got a bad one and the replacement will be a good one.

Thanks for the graph

SWEPCO 212 will keep your diff in the best shape possible. No friction modifier needed for clutch type LSDs.
