Post subject:  EGR Secret in plug

Hi

I've read a few posts about un plugging the EGR. I've a few questions

What mods need to be applied when you un plug the EGR
How does it effect emission tests
And does it damage the engine or exhaust system
And also is there a down side to doing it?

Look forward to your guidance

No mods are needed to just unplug the egr. Only down side is the cel on the dash. But you will get use to it. Thought I read something on here about the engine coolant runs through the egr and may cause cooler eng temps but I never looked to see if there was even hoses going to it. I live where the temps get down to -40*f and the temp gage runs just below 12 o'clock on my crd. As for damage? Nothing I know of but others may know better than me?

Yes you dont UNplug the EGR..you unplug the Mass airflow Sensor...

called the Off road mod...its for "off road use" only...COUGH COUGH...

as soon as you have a CEL on..your readiness has failed...aka...you will fail your emissions test. unless its perhaps an opacity test..which..you may still fail for the light.

How do you overcome this? plug your maf in...clear your CEL...go for e-test...unplug...

I believe exports crds have a different egr, and in that case, disconnect the vacuum does disable egr for exports. Only us here in us have this electronic crap egr...

For the export models it only needs to have a blanking plate inserted between the poppet valve at the rear of the throttle body and the stainless tube that runs around the rear of the block (between the block and the firewall) from the rear tail on the exhaust manifold (where the band clamp is) at its simplest.
You should get no CEL as I note you are in UK.

Seem to recall dimensions for a blanking plate somewhere in this forum.

It is a bit difficult to get to but I managed and I have mobility issues.
My tube (as described above) "fell off" and I capped the tail of the exhaust (it is quite cool (relatively) with a welch plug and made a blanking plate in 6 mm thick mild steel - removed the mill scale with hydrochloric acid then filed and scraped it true on a surface place (but that is overkill). A gasket of appropriate material is easiest but only if the tube falls off.

You may not be able to let the tube disappear although it does take some spotting.

It does depend what year engine you have, pre 2005 its a case of unplugging the vacuum pipe, post 05 IIRC we get the same spec egr as the US models

Yeah it is a case of pulling off the vacuum pipe at the EGR solenoid, block off the exposed nipple on the solenoid with a small self-tapping screw and place the vacuum pipe back over the screw.

As stated this applies only to Export CRDs up to 2004.....and you need to hope that your EGR is not jammed open when you do this.

I do not see any details listed about your Jeep such as year and type of gearbox.
We now know that on 2005 and 2006 US models, the ORM is not nearly as effective for making these last as originally thought. A GDE tune is essential for longest possible life. BTW, Keith at GDE will probably have the best suggestion for your UK version.

The EGR is definitely electric controlled, so pull the maf sensor will do the trick? Will it have an effect on the cat part of the exhaust system?

Interesting, the change in the UK was to meet euro4 or euro5 emissions, so is the earlier system cheaper or better I wonder.

That's not correct, my 2007 export model does not have the same egr valve as US models. US models use an electrical controlled valve, export models use vacuum control ( at least the 2006 and 07s exported to Australia do). Export models can block off egr without raising a CEL.
BTW if you do block it off you will lose the turbo surge protection function as the egr valve is used to bleed off overboost. Better choice is a GDE tune which will turn off egr except when used for surge protection.

he said the true , my 2007 it's the same

all 2005 and 2006 KJ used the electronic egr valve in all markets. In 2007 Export market VM moved to pneumatic egr valve that was less prone to sticking closed or open. There may have been a few late 2006 KJs that had this redesigned egr valve as well.

My KJ is an end of run 2007MY Sport

I'm sure the EGR is electronic as I can hear it cycling before and after start up!
Does UN plugging the Maf sensor put in danger the catalytic converter?

look at on top of the engine , driver side , if you see a vacuum solenoid , it's pneumatic otherwise it's electronic , i have a friend with a my end 2007 with pneumatic

Post subject:  Re: EGR Secret in plug

This is interesting - mine is as Glend described but build Sept 2006.
Apologies for the lengthy explanation.

The relatively simple issues I've had to deal with regarding EGR have indicated that it is a total hodge-podge at that particular period of the model with certain parts deemed "only 2007 models" by CJD. As an example, there are radically different tubes used to connect between the exhaust manifold tail, thence, running behind the engine block and to the poppet valve at the rear of the throttle body.

This tube is particularly poorly designed as it has little or no room for thermal expansion that is why so many have literally fallen off - they break and cost in the order of AUD700 to replace.....unless I made it myself which will happen as outlined.
This part is not to be had even on our 2nd hand market either.
The design puts a tremendous shear load on the V-band clamp flange at the exhaust manifold tail. The only give in this system is at the V-band clamp where it breaks off through a combination of vibration and thermal expansion.

So, in my case, when the GDE tune finally goes in that tube will be replaced with my tube reinstalled and re-designed with the capacity for thermal expansion. Two firmly fixed ends do not work when there is no place for yield in the tube.

So as Yeti stated you really need to determine what precisely you are dealing with - they fluffed this part of the show up in a big way.
