| Post subject: | Transfer Case Lever Will Not Move Again |
This occurred a few weeks ago in 5F weather after driving in deep snow, but resolved after spending an hour in a warm shop. Jeep is currently in 2WD. Transfer case lever will not move. Tried shifting into all gears, driving back and forth, rolling in neutral, etc, will not budge. It is now well above freezing, so water frozen in cable/linkage seems out. (Transfer case fluid was replaced less than 10K miles ago.) Is the next step to disconnect linkage and isolate whether it is linkage or transfer case? Thanks as always, DOC |

That would be the easiest thing to do - It is a cable that pulls on an external lever on the transfer case. You should be able to unclip the end on the lever, and move the lever by hand or pliers. If the cable froze, it is possible that the water got within the spaces of the wire rope cable, and expanded it into the walls of the sheath. That could either break some of the strands, or they are just jammed into the sheath now. |

DOC, Have you tried parking it on an incline, putting it in neutral and rolling backwards for a few feet then stopping and trying to engage. Here is what I got from the web click on the links http://northwestoverland.com/Forum/tabi ... fault.aspx http://northwestoverland.com/Forum/tabi ... fault.aspx |

Doc I don't know if it will help any but take a glance at viewtopic.php?f=98&t=69582 As geordi says the cable attaches to the lever. If the plastic clip on the lever dies the transfer case shift lever just flops around with not resistance when you pull on it. However the cable slides inside a sheath that's held in place by the other little plastic clip that I mention if the link. I wonder what might happen if that sheath retaining clip broke. Just a thought. |

Looks like the NP242 is locked up. Having it looked at to be rebuilt. Thanks again! DOC |

Turns out it was a stuck detent. NP242 uses a ball end that seized up. It also uses a VERY stiff spring. We replaced with one from an NP241. It is a non-roller type with a smoother contour and a shorter, softer spring. It always seemed to me that it took too much force to move the lever with the OEM detent. All seems to be well for now.
