Post subject:  Diesel fuel smell and no power

I had a brief episode today while 130 miles from home.
I take off and all of a sudden I have no power going up an incline.
Pop the hood and pump the primer button. Thank goodness that solved my problem and allowed me to get home.

1. I am starting to smell raw fuel.
2. Filter has 10,000 miles on it.
3. No signs of leaks from the engine compartment. I haven't searched underneath yet.

I recall read that the fuel lines have a quick disconnect type of connection that is problematic.

Suggestions please....

Thanks for any help.

Simply isn't it possible that some diesel leaked into the engine bay when you pumped the air out of the primer ?
It happens to me most of the time that I pump the primer.

There's nothing "QUICK" about the fuel line disconnects. They are made like brake lines. The only thing that could happen to them is that they crack, break, or are loose. You could check the nuts on the end at the injectors as well as the ones on the fuel rail, check the fuel rail itself, etc.

Even with only 10k miles on the filter, change it. I would recommend Napa Gold.

I would also recommend an inline fuel pump if you continue to have this issue, but it's not uncommon.

Did you get a CEL? Might be that your FCV or EGR crapped out.

Just my thoughts.

There are a host of possible leak points that may need checking. I don't think the quick disconnects are one of those points as a) they are back by the fuel tank not the engine bay and b) in contrast to the gasser engine the diesel fuel pump is on the front of the engine hence it "pulls" fuel from the tank and as a result the quick disconnects tend to leak air into the fuel lines not fuel out of the fuel lines.

You need to take a close look starting at the fuel filter head all the way to the injectors and fuel rail return line to the fuel tank. Most common leak points are a) the fuel filter head heater element on the 2st gen head driver side (2 gen head has a bright blue plug - see Sir Sams NOOB guide), b) the bleeder screw on the filter head can leak, c) at least a couple of folks have found a leak around the primer pump shaft, d) fuel injectors can leak around base and pool fuel on top of engine. I fine dry paper towels are very good for finding even small leaks as they "show" moisture quite well.

I replaced the fuel filter yesterday. No improvement. Air filter was fine too.

What I have noticed in recent days is that after the engine starts in have a noticeable discharge of exhaust smoke. This has just started too.
I am wanting to check the intake elbow to.see if its clogged with build up also.
Air restriction may be my problem.

Thanks everyone for your help.
