This morning, it was 3 below zero (had been 6 below), and I had forgotten to plug it in. After letting the plugs heat, I cranked. It chugged, but did not start. I did another key cycle. Cranked again, this time it slowly began to speed up. It finally began to run on its own. But, when I released the key, it slowed down and chugged along about 800. Even with my foot on the throttle, it just sputtered away at 800 - 1000, missing on 2-3 cylinders. It would catch another cylinder, speed up, and then drop it again. It did this for about 30 to 45 seconds, and then finally began to speed up some, and about 1200 rpm, suddenly all 4 cylinders caught and belched out a massive cloud and then ran smooth. I have the etecno 7v steel plugs, with no modification to the start system. I was also missing my normal dose of Stanadyne Performance Formula from Sunday's fill ( forgot to get another bottle from the garage, and the one I had with me was empty). It contains a cetane improver and very noticeably improves starts in cold weather. |

Probably with wind chill it was way colder and the diesel almost gelled. |

a cold soak (the car cools down to ambient) is a cold soak, wind chill will hasten it getting there but does not make it any colder than ambient when there. |

"This morning, it was 3 below zero (had been 6 below), and I had forgotten to plug it in. " Nope didn't hit her yet. -22ºF, no plug in, cycled the dreaded ceramic wicks once, rolled over mighty slow, fired up, sounded like the pistons were changing holes, smoothed right out. The Princess said she had -26ºF on the overhead after working her shift, cycled the wicks twice, and away she went. I've run out of cold testing weather till next year to see just how cold she'll go. |

-19F a couple weeks ago, stock GPs, Stanadyne, 2 key-on cycles... and she cranked up, doing her best bucket-o-bolts impression for a few seconds. Make Polar Vortex your favorite

You are correct and I was wrong. Unless crd is a live entity Wind chill is a measure of how FAST heat is lost, not to what temperature something is lowered. A wind chill of -50 has the same theoretical heat loss effect as still air, at -50, even though the actual temperature may only be -10. However, no matter the wind speed, nothing will get colder than -10. Live or not live, it doesn't actually matter, the heat is lost just the same. What matters about a human being, is that our skin has moisture, which evaporates and takes heat away faster than would happen if there were no moisture. Also, that our skin can freeze or suffer cold damage, whereas a chunk of metal would not. |

Make Polar Vortex your favorite ![]() The stock glow plugs are definitely better at starting. And, also, the glow plug system seems to be brain-dead. It should steadily cycle the plugs to keep them warm, but I can't tell if it does, it doesn't seem to. Worse, it seems to not cycle them as long if you don't leave the key off long enough. |

My CRD does nothing when you cycle. But my stock 5v steels, with 1 gone already, will start down below 20 (or maybe 15), it will start giving me trouble. I use Optilube XDP treatment. I think it is still starting good for only 3 cylinders. |

Also, that our skin can freeze or suffer cold damage, whereas a chunk of metal would not. Actually the wind evaporating moisture from your skin can chill it to a lower than ambient temp. That is how a psychrometer works, and is the whole principle behind wind chill numbers. It's not based off speed of cooling. You are right that wind can't cool a dry object lower than the air temp. I chuckled last week when my father in law told me his pipes froze because of the -20 wind chill. Wind chill numbers are only relevant for exposed skin, and not buildings, engine blocks or such like. Even at that it has just become a number that people throw around to make it sound colder than it really is. I hate when meteorologists start talking wind chill. As if anyone goes out when it's -10 and windy with a ton of exposed skin. |
