Post subject:  Injector new or rebuild

Hello and thanks for reading...

I have a bad #4 injector (I think is #4, its against the fire wall) anyway, is it possible to have these rebuilt rather then buying new? I have not investigated local diesel shops and their ability to rebuild these injectors, but if I remember correctly, these bad boy's go for around $400 new so I thought I would ask the rebuild questions. Thanks!

They go for somewhat more than that new. Yes they can be rebuilt but I'd be really picky about who dies the work, ideally a Bosch certified shop.

What leads you to the conclusion that you have a bad injector? Just asking. I know they can go bad but if it's just leaking around the base, for example, that's cured by a new copper crush washer + "O" ring.

If you do install a new injector in an ideal world your ECU needs to be "told" the injector code for best performance.

I got a code that pointed in that direction and with the addition of it running very rough. I pulled the injector and tried cleaning it, but when I re-installed it, it ran the same. I don't remember the code number, but could look it up.....

(edit-Code P304)

Fill the fuel filter with seafoam, add the rest in the tank and let it run for a few. See if that doesn't free up the injector.

Some other members suggested filling the fuel filter with Automatic Transmission Fluid with good results.

Seafoam? I'm not familiar with that. Is that the brand name? Can I get it at any automotive place? Thanks for the suggestion!

A quick google search got me the answer, so I assume this stuff works? I suppose easier then pulling the injector again. Thanks again!

Add it full strength in an empty fuel filter.

You should drain all the fuel from the filter that is attached to the head now and then refill it with the Seafoam or transmission fluid. Then let CRD run for 2 - 3 minutes at idle, then stop the motor and let the solution sit in the injector for a while, I would let it sit overnight.

It will start to dissolve the hard stuff, the next day take it for a long drive on the highway get the motor hot, it should start to respond better.

Do it several times if you have time, over several days, most often than not the problem goes away and it is due to fouling.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Before you buy a new injector or have one rebuilt make sure that it is the injector causing the problem. I had a code on my CRD: Misfire on cyl #1. I assumed that it was a bad injector. I bought a new one and installed. It did not fix the problem (the actual problem was two bad rockers).

Here is a no cost way to check your injector: swap the "bad" injector with a good one. Clear the code. Drive until it throws a new code. If the code follows the injector to the other cylinder, then the injector is bad. If the code stays with the original cylinder, then you probably have a bad rocker.

Thank you!! I think the last two suggestions will be plan A and plan B...The easiest of course being plan A...I'm a mediocre mechanic so all the help I can get is appreciated.

Sounds like you may have bad fuel. Did you recently fill up when it started missing on #4? I filled my Jeep a few weeks ago and it started misfiring on #4. I was ready to start tearing out the injector but instead bought a bottle of HEET and some cetane boost. Poured them in and the next day it ran like a dream. Running great still. Sometimes the solution to a misfire is a very cheap solution...

Every single time you pull an injector out you MUST REPLACE THE COPPER CRUSH WASHER UNDER THE INJECTOR!

I can't say that enough, sorry if it's been said already.

If you don't, you risk misfire error codes like you already have (heh).

You must replace the copper crush washer every time.

YES! I did this right actually!! Thanks to the fine folks on this site, I got that info when I pulled the injector. Actually, it wasn't a fun job, but it did teach me a lot about how my jeep works and saved me a few pennies from taking it into my useless local dealer.
I'm still trying to find a GOOD local diesel mechanic for my Jeep. Thanks for all the help-I will let you all know what the outcome is once I use the Seafoam.
