Took my '05 CRD into the dealership for an exhaust smell. They came back with a turbo and exhaust manifold replacement for around $5k...ouch!

The vehicle has 135k miles on it...and I'm in the middle of an interstate move. I don't want to get rid of the truck, but can't justify $5k.

Question: the truck drove fine, prior to taking it into the dealership...turbo spun, and I didn't feel any lack of power...just the exhaust smell. I understand the cracked manifold, but what's saying the turbo needs replacing?

Any thoughts on the turbo? Stick with it and just replace the manifold, replace it all?

Thanks!

You just need to check the shaft for excessive play, more than 1/32" or so of in and out play, and there should be barely any perceivable side to side play. If there is more play than that, then it's smart to replace (about $1200), and if the manifold is cracked, then that's another few hundred. A decent mechanic could do the whole job for about half of what that stealer quoted you!

And, the manifold is likely just fine... Some people even get them welded if it is cracked, but I'm not knowledgable about that practice.

Thanks Mountainman.

Waiting to hear back from a local shop right now, and from the dealership on details about why they think the turbo is bad.

KBB on these sits around $6k...worth it to drop 1/2 that into a rig that may just end up with more issues...

You know what gets a lot of Craigslist hits...a Mechanics special CRD for $2500. WOW
