I've been chasing a coolant leak for awhile now. I added some uv dye and have now isolated the leak to a bolt just above the oil filter. What the heck could be leaking in that area? |

Could it be leaking from the oil cooler? |

Check to see if the firewall just under the passenger wheel well is wet.... do you have coolant dripping from the passenger side rail/frame at the wheel well? |

Not even sure if this is in the vicinity of your leak, but I had a coolant leak in the small coolant hose running to the EGR valve. It was hard to track down, as it would only leak when it was warm. |

This would be my guess as well. When you turn heat on, fan on high do you smell coolant? Check the heater hoses where they go through the firewall. Maybe replace the spring clamps with screw clamps |

Does you cooling system have pressure in it, when the engine has cooled down to ambient temperature? If not, take a sigh of relief. |

If its under pressure after cooling down, is it likely a head gasket? I'm loosing coolant too but haven't seen where. I'm worried its not good at all. Thanks |

Check your EGR coolant lines. A likely culprit. |

So, after giving up I took it to the local jeep dealer. After several weeks they decided it was the head gasket, but they couldn't figure out how to disassemble the engine. It's at a new shop now, and they have it apart. The diagnosis is that the block is cracked. Hard to believe with just over 100k miles, but the crack is certainly there. The shop has realized how rare a replacement block is and has also offered to try block seal and epoxy, but even they say it might not hold. I'm really hoping to find a replacement block that I can get to the shop. Any chance someone has a block they'd like to sell, or know where a reasonable one may be? As far as I know all my internals are ok. |

So I am not the only one with a dead Liberty with a cracked engine block, I have been fighting this for over a year now I have exhausted all options as there are no used engines and the dealer wants $18000 to replace the engine (I am in Canada) I have found an offshore new engine but the shipping will proably kill the deal. My block is cracked at the back behind the bell housing, "I" removed the engine last winter and found the crack, it is nasty, I tried to repair with epoxy but it cracked right away again.I will pul the engine once more and see if a local welding shop can weld it or try to find another dead Liberty with a good block and go from there. Or give to the wreckers for $500 like they are offering me

If you have no other choice, I would try K-Seal.... It sealed the hairline crack in the engine block of a friends Land Rover Defender. He left the solution in the system and forgot about it, The solution sat in the system while he planned for a welding job on the block. After many cool downs later, he checked the system fro leaks again and it was gone. K-Seal did not cure the head gasket problem I was experiencing with my CRD, it may cure the hairline crack you're experiencing though. |
