Rear crank seal has gone on our 2.8 auto, any ideas as to the hours required to get it swapped? Need to decide if I am going to get a garage to swap it or not.

thanks

In the US, an average charge would be about $1200.

1200, is that about 12 hours at $100?

It seems like its pull the tyranny, transfer case, tranny adaptor then flywheel to get to the rear main. I could see that being a 6 hour job.

Average labor rate is $125-$150 per hour for most shops.5-6 hours alone to drop the trans, then 2 or so hours to change the actual seal plus parts.

I can see it being a pain in the a@@. the rear main is probably the most annoying thing you can ever have to replace. you have to take so many things apart that nothings wrong with to get to one seal. its about as deep as you can get. I don't think pulling a crankshaft is annoying as a rear seal.

A shop owned by a friend has estimated 10 hours, I am getting mates rates on the labour at £40/hour so £400 / $700ish. Seems a better deal than you guys are getting!. I would happily do it on my WJ myself, the lift it has means its easy access, but the KJ is too low to do it without a pit or ramp.

Any other jobs worth doing while in there? IFAIK it is only the rear seal that has an issue

Replace torque converter and/or trans pump, clutch packs, etc., if needed (assuming you have an automatic, of course.)

Make sure the surface of the crank that rides in the seal is good.

EHM will prevent you from blowing out the new rear main seal.

Labor rate will depend on where you live and if the shop is in the city or on the out skirts of town. Labor rates where I live range from 95 in town to 65 as you get a little further away.
