New to CRD's, had my 2005 2.8 for a year now, has 70k on it, first problem I have had: When you step on the gas the rpms drop off and black smoke comes out, then rpms pick back up and smoke disappears, then the cycle is repeated. Check engine light is on. If you use a light foot you can slowly pick up speed and it runs ok. Dealer replaced air and fuel filters, boost hoses, MAF sensor, and I had them check the MAP sensor and they said it was clean. After all that the problem persists. They say it is not showing any codes. After reading the noob guide I'm going to try to bleed the filter head tonight. Anybody else have this issue? Know a mechanic in the San Antonio area? Thanks. |

Sounds like an EGR sticking to me. Did you trying pulling the connector on the MAF, which disables the EGR; and see if it runs better. I would try that first and go from there. The MAF is the large connector on top of the airbox. 70,000 on an '05...the intake tube assembly is going to be completely loaded with soot and crud. |

I'm confused - a) "Check engine light is on." and b) "They say it is not showing any codes. " those 2 comments don't normally go together unless the dealer cleared codes in which case the question is what codes. See my P0299 comments at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=78957 as it initially sounds like you have a boost issue. PS - I note you say the Dealer inspected the MAP sensor (top rear of engine) and it was clean. In hindsight my antenna go up as, unless you cleaned or replaced the MAP sensor within the last say 3-6 months, there is no way it was clean. Even with the GDE tune my MAP sensor gets a bit dirty in that period of time, not caked solid but noticeably dirty. |

No power and black smoke means more fuel than air - lack of boost somewhere. No power and no smoke means more air than fuel - usually fuel filter issues. In your case, I would strongly suspect the EGR is either stuck open or you have a leaking boost hose. The hoses can be inspected quite easily, but they need to be removed from the engine to do so. Feel them all around and check for soft spots or holes. A dead giveaway is if the "Chinese finger puzzle" is coated in wet filth. This is caused by the oil being forced through the walls of the hose, degrading it until it becomes porous. The oil collects on the outside and grows "hair" by collecting dust. The dealer saying they cannot find any codes (or didn't) is also fishy, because the idiot light won't come on without a code being stored. Not sure what is going on with that one. If the map sensor was not getting any pressure due to a boost leak, like the EGR or Boost hose, why would the ECU just continue to dump fuel? I am asking out of curiosity, not to debate what people have said. |

I don't have a specific answer to that, and it has bothered me too. My TDI will get very snotty and cut the power into limp mode if the boost isn't what it should be, and throw an under boost code. Maybe the CRD is less sensitive to that, or the code requires a longer period of underboost so the computer can trip a " something isn't working" threshold. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD |

Geordi, I have an OEM thermostat. This morning temps were: Outside ambient temp 61 degrees. Top of thermostat 189. Top of valve cover 187 Top of viscous heater 193 @ inside coolant tank through coolant 160. No pressure at all under the cap |

All, thanks for your help. "Sherman" had a bad turbo solenoid and a hole in one of the boost hoses. Now he motors on like the little tank that he is. The Jeep dealer was no help whatsoever, they just started replacing parts at random, then wanted to bill me for not fixing the problem. I found a shop by looking for TDI mechanics. Experienced with little furrin diesels. They said the solenoid was hot to the touch that is how they found it. Got some new samco hoses too. Y'all might be interested in their web site they do diesel conversions as well. DieselToys.com San Antonio, Texas |

I know this is a very old thread but I recently experienced this problem with my 2005 Liberty CRD with 320,000km's on it. Started suddenly while on the highway with the cruise on at 100kph. Engine light came on, a look in the mirror revealed clouds of back smoke. Disabled cruise and realized that I only had just enough power to keep the vehicle at 90kph. Vehicle idled just fine; no smoke, sounded good. The initial normal pull away from stop was pretty normal but further depressing of the accelerator peddle only produced smoke and very little more power. Code reported was turbo under boost The problem turned out to be a blown turbo hose. The one between the intake and the after cooler. It was blown on the bottom side up near the engine intake and was not visible from topside. I spent several hours trying to sort this one out and won't bother with the details. The rational for the fault producing loads of black smoke is that as the turbo was running without obstruction, the air box was gobbling huge amounts of air. The mass airflow sensor would have seen this huge airflow and the ECM would naturally respond with opening up the injector pulse width in a attempt to make some reasonable air fuel ratio. Amazon had the hoses. About $125US for both. https://photos.app.goo.gl/ZtNg9dgwukUmghYGA |

Me too, but he did say dealer changed boost hoses didn't read all so done know what he found but guess sticking vanes could do that and dealer not checked. |
