Has anyone on this list rebuilt a 2.8 CRD? More specifically has anyone replaced the crankshaft bearings? My block is back from the shop, fresh sleeves, etc. I whipped out my trusty VM.1073 Crankshaft front bearing tool, and pulled the stock bearings out slick as can be. Now, I reversed the process to put my .25 mm oversized bearing in, and the tool got stuck. I went and removed the bearing, and now it has tiny grooves in it that match the tiny grooves in the tool. It seems like the tool is the right size for stock size bearings, but is slightly too think for the .25 mm oversize bearings. At this point, I am thinking I need to find someone with a lathe and turn the tool down about .25 mm and get another bearing, or try to find another tool that fits. Any ideas anyone? John |

I suspect that they expect you to replace the crank and not have it remachined, hence why the tool is not working with oversize bearings. Interesting conundrum..... |

The machine shop is 30 miles away, and only open 8-5 M-F when I am at work. I'm leaning towards having them turn my tool down .25 mm. Based on how you use the tool, it seems like that won't make any difference in how it works. The shoulder is the part that pushes the bearing in or out. Well I decided to give it a shot and have my VM.1073 crankshaft front bearing tool turned down 0.25 mm, worked like a champ. Front crank bearing now installed. |
