| Post subject: | Flame Red CRD shudders after start up and hesitates |
I have a couple of questions about my CRD, I noticed that when I start it after sitting for a couple of days it will shudder and sometimes it will even die after putting it into gear under little or no load unless I let it idle for 5 min before trying to move it out of the shed. It kind of acts like it has low fuel pressure or air in the fuel system. I also noticed that it hesitates every time on moderate acceleration cold or hot for a couple seconds and then it gets a boost of torque all at once lurches forward and heavy black smoke rolls comes out the tail pipe and then it clears up again. Iam not sure if these problems are related, I don't have any check engine light or any diagnostic codes. This vehicle has had an extensive amount of recent service since I bought it including all new rockers, timing belt, eco tune, several new sensors, and its been smoke machine tested for vacuum leaks in the intake hoses. Their are no strange noises and the motor idles very smooth and quiet for a diesel. If any one has any suggestions of where to start on this please let me know because Iam almost afraid to take this thing off the farm until I know that its going to be reliable. |

Did you check for air in the fuel head? |

I just primed the fuel filter head, It did have air in it, but I don't think its fixed my problem. |

I don't think you've taken into account that it's "Flame Red". I always write Flame Red CRD in my posts because the senior members are familiar with it, this vehicle has been trouble from the very start and I even had to tow it home one time with my Volkswagen Jetta TDI when it decided to unexpectedly stall on me |

Camshaft sensor? Fuel pressure regulator? Loose fuel line going to the injectors? See if the fuel head has air in it again. Maybe you're sucking in air from the connections at the tank. |

Could be a transmission issue. Mine occasionally does this, and I suspect that it is something to do with the torque converter possibly. It has done this for a long time. It does not happen often. It seems that if I park it on an incline, this happens. May be caused by drain back of the trans. fluid. If purging the air and priming the fuel system does not help, I would suspect something else other than fuel... As for the smoke... it could be a sticking EGR valve, or a turbo issue. I get smoke and some hesitation without the ORM. With the ORM, I get nearly no smoke and no hesitation at all. Perhaps take it back to the dealer that didn't want to pay for the warranty repairs and let them diagnose it

Ok I think Iam finally getting somewhere with this thing I found out that if I prime the fuel filter head ever time before I start it after sitting for A few days it doesn't shutter and it starts quicker as well. As for the problem with hesitation delayed throttle response and heavy smoke I think and hope its an egr issue because today I took off the egr valve and it was a PITA. I had to take the fuel filter head off, the battery out and then I ended up spilling antifreeze all over the floor because I couldn't find the drain plug on the radiator. My question is how do I test the EGR now that I have it off to see if its stuck in the open position. Its supposed to be closed all the time since I have done the eco tune, However that doesn't mean that it wasn't stuck open from before. |

Why bother testing? Just block the line off and call it good. |

Pull the solenoid coil off the EGR valve and push or pull on the shaft. It should move with a little bit of effort. If it is stuck, take the valve apart and clean it with solvent etc. Seemed I was doing this every 6 months when we got the '05 Limited CRD in '07 until the GDE tune fixed it for good. |

I took apart the EGR valve today and to my surprise it wasn't that bad it moved freely and wasn't stuck at all. But I found out that I have other problems down stream in the intake that might be causing the hesitation and heavy smoke. After taking the stainless steel tube off that goes from the EGR valve to the intake butterfly valve I found that their is an extreme amount of oily sludge especially where the large intake tube meets the EGR gasses going right into the intake manifold itself. I then took off the intake butterfly valve and looked up into the intake manifold itself and its even worse. I am very upset that the mechanic didn't clean the intake manifold as I instructed them to last year when they replaced the rockers, they didn't even take it apart to look they just hurried it back together. Iam not sure if the sludge is the root cause of my problem or not but it sure seems like the engine sucking in all that sludge would restrict air flow and make the engine hesitate and smoke more than it should. Now I am going to have to find someone that can take the whole intake off for me again so it can be properly cleaned. |
