05 CRD Limited 125k miles, new to me this spring, TB replaced last month. Today, driving north of Reno, 100+ degrees, I took off to merge with traffic on a long hill, all of a sudden performance died. I got up the hill by gearing down, hooked up my OBD2 unit, and looked at the boost. (BTW, this is at about 5k elevation). Where i would expect it to power up the hill with 15PSI boost, I was seeing 5 or less. Headed on home like that, and had to make a brief stop at Home Depot to buy a new air conditioner (did I mention that it's hot here). Came out and expected it to get me home with minimal power, as I thought maybe it had blown a boost hose. I was surprised that it had returned to its normal excellent performance. Any idea what happened? I didn't check to see if it has thrown any new codes, but I am running ORM. No tune (yet). |

My guess would be air in the fuel system. This sort of thing has only happened to me once since I installed the in-tank lift pump five years ago. It happened at 7,500ft on a hot summer day. |

Sounds like it went into limp mode due to fuel starvation; consider adding a lift pump in the tank as some of us have done to solve this problem. (been there done that) In the mean time, if it does it again; pull over, stop the engine, and pump up the fuel head and then restart and see if the problem disappears. If it does, you have diagnosed your problem....

before you add the lift pump....did you change the fuel filter? they can get clogged - and as noted fuel issues seldom throw codes - just go into limp mode (commonly clears when you turn it off/on) |

I think you guys have hit on the problem, thanks. Yes, I changed the filter, along with pretty much everything else in the noob guide. I was hot and frustrated this afternoon and didn't think of that. I guess that I could diagnose it a bit by bleeding it again and seeing if there is any air. Ed |

Sounds just like a filter on the verge of being blocked. Fuel makes boost, they say. You only notice it under high demand. Then after a restart you can drive away. |

I doubt it's that. Fuel filter was changed in the last 1k miles. |
