Post subject:  Airtex E7181M Fuel pump notes

Hi everyone,

I am preparing to install the Airtex E7181M in my CRD but when I looked at the specs, I was concerned about possible overpressure issues. Their tech looked at the pump print and informed me that it has a shut off at 10 to 15 psi, which is why their 30psi pump works on our CRD's.. Spec's and email conversation below..

Fuel Pump Module Assembly E7181M
Attributes
UPC: 080044011477
Type: Turbine
Volts: 12
Inlet Type: Strainer
Outlet Size: 3/8 in.
Outlet Type: Quick Connect
GPH (Free Flow): 75-90
Max Pump PSI: 15-30(Not System)

The max pump PSI was my biggest concern, so I contacted Airtex by email and had the following conversation:
Question -
Quote:
Is it possible to adjust the output pressure of the E7181M? I am going to install an in-tank lift pump for my 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD but I want the max lift pressure to be approximately 10psi. Is this possible? Or is there another fuel module that has similar specs but a lower output pressure?

The fuel pressure will not be able to be adjusted on that fuel pump module and unfortunately we do not offer a fuel pump module for this application.

Question -
Quote:
This is a modification that a lot of the 2005/06 Jeep Liberty CRD owners are doing in order to reduce entrained air and vapor lock of the existing on-engine pump - with good success. I know the E7181M's pump pressure range is 15 to 30. What is the nominal output pressure at 13 volts? The people I am talking to that have used this pump for the mod, did so in 2011. Was the output pressure different for this model of pump at or before that time? I'm going to do the mod but I'm making sure that don't need to add a fuel pressure regulator.

The information I have on the print shows that the shut off (maximum) pressure for the E7181M is 10-15 psi.

I think that there are several satisfied users of this pump who are on this forum, who swear by them.

I installed one in CRD #2, back when I was trying to figure out my problems, which turned out to be an evil  Crankcase Position Sensor.

I noted a constant 15# pressure at the fuel filter.
Being a worry wart, I ended up removing it at the advice of others at the time.

I have a new one unused in the box that I would like to sell, and I also have one that was used for a week that I would sell to anyone interested.

I have a Airtex Pump installed in my Jeep with no issues. It puts out 14.5 psi at idle, according to the gauge before the filter.

I was sent this from another member, I have no way to verify any of the information, but it seems to make sense.

Quote:
I've been using a lift pump solution since May of 2007. I've used Kennedy's running at 6 psi and later the Airtex E7181M running at 16 psi, for a year I ran both the Kennedy & the Airtex at 20 psi on my gauge (identical to yours). My gauge is on the output port of my Racor 2 micron filter. I checked the rail pressure and with the lift pumps on and off and it keeps the same rail pressure at any rpm.

The seals in the CP3 are capable of handling 180 psi internally on the low pressure input side (as that's what Cummins uses and Bosch doesn't spec lower pressure seals on the CP3 for the liberty) so you're nowhere near the limit. Bosch uses the same pump bodies for the Cummins, Duramax and our Jeeps, but uses different regulator valves, FCA and piston sizes. The Cummins, Duramax and our CRD high pressure of the same generation all have the same high pressure psi - 1600 bar (23,200 psi), so the internals have to be built to handle at least that on the high side and the low side is built to handle the 180 that both Dodge and GM use on their trucks.

As long as you don't exceet the regulator stage II pressure (44psi), to the CP3 input line, you'll be fine. Even at 44 psi. all that would happen is that the internal regulator valve would move to stage II and provide more internal lubrication, but you'd wouldn't even notice any differnce in idle quality at all. The internal 3 stage regulator will vent any lift pump pressure above 73 psi back to the fuel tank. The beauty of the Airtex E7181M is that's its the Mopar OE and is designed for the CP3 on the Cummins equipped Ram.

Good information to know, thanks.

Another note note - on another thread, someone had asked why the return line discharges right next to the in-tank pump inlet - Airtex's response makes sense....
Quote:
The return line is ran inside of the module to make sure that the reservoir stays full at all times. This will ensure that there is always fuel at the inlet of the pump in a low fuel condition.

Thanks the additional comments in this thread. I wasn't sure about the Airtex pump before. I thought I had read that the CP3 was only designed to handle 15 psi and that caused me to worry about the Airtex specs.

Jeepdan - The order I placed for the pump from Rock Auto has already shipped or I would buy one of the ones you are selling.
