I know this has been hashed around before but I still cant see why this could not be done, as far as the electronics go the transmission would be the hardest to deal with or is there another kind of 4 cylinder diesel that may be a better fit. I called around the country and talked to different wreckers for a used VM engine, I came across quite a few but they all had 1 of three things wrong, Cracked engine blocks, Cracked heads or the previous owners did not change the timing belts and piled up the valve train. Does anyone know of somewhere that sells new VM's or at least parts for them, I would like to get this little guy running again as it is a nice vehicle to drive. Otherwise the wreckers will give me $500 for the entire Jeep, I just laughed at them, or have a guy willing to give me $1500 for it as is:(

I bet it could be done with enough time/money. Even tho its a 4 banger, its a large heavy engine made of all iron. I'd bet that the pan wouldn't fit, either chop it an weld it or do a dry sump. In all seriousness I'd look at a yanmar or Kubota. An Isuzu 4jb1 is a 2.8L direct injected motor that's all mechanical and very robust.

Its about 5600 for a rebuilt vm long block from the dealer with a 3500 core charge.

Where are you located? What happened to your jeep that makes you think you need a new engine?

I agree with Geordi, update your Signature with location, mods, mileage and you may find all the parts and knowledge to get your tractor back online right around the corner.

The three rules of engine swaps:
1. They are never easy
2. They are never cheap
3. They are always cool 8)
