| Post subject: | KJ won't start after timing belt replacement |
Hi, I may need some help, I have replaced the timing belt on my 07 2.8l KJ with out the pins to locate the camshaft gears, I made my own marks on the gears and removed the belt, I have installed the new belt and rotated the engine 12 times with a spanner to make sure my marks line up. the question is, does the fuel pump need to be perfectly lined up as I may be out by 1 tooth? I have tried to start with brake clean just to make sure their wasn't any other problem, but this did not help. I am strapped for time to get this running before Wednesday night before I go back to work for 2 weeks, any help would be appreciated. Also I don't have any type of scan tool. |

Hi you do not need to time the fuel pump. |

Sorry for your trouble. A bit more info might help: does it crank but not start? Does it sputter? Do you smell fuel? But honestly, get even a cheapy scan tool. My guess is that you forgot to connect some sensor, and a scan might help point you in the right direction...although I'm not even sure it will work without a start. |

the engine cranks and will not even attempt to fire, as for removing of sensors, none have been removed, that is what is bugging me, I am in the process of aligning the crank and cam gears using some sort of pin/ drill bit to check if for some reason the crank has rotated 180 deg. |

If you didn't remove any wiring or disconnect a fuel line, and didn't rotate anything while the timing belt was off, I'm not sure what the problem would be. Worst case, I would think you might want to get everything to TDC, then 90 degrees after that, and see if your cam alignment holes are in the right spot. That might also include pulling the cam gears to make sure the keyways are both facing in. The fuel pump (probably) does not need to be "timed" since it is just supplying pressure to the injector rail, and letting the electric impulse to the Injector fire it. |

Mechanics and individuals who rely on the "pray and mark" method for a tb job usually don't fair very well. I'd beg, borrow, or buy the proper tools and double check your timing. |

If he made marks from the sprockets to the old belt, and transferred the marks to the new belt it would have worked, but at this point he needs to lock the Crank and the 2 cam shafts and start over. |

Thanks for the tips, I actually set the timing up again using drill bits as 7mm drill bits are the same size as the tooling ( I am in OZ) and found that some how the cam timing was off by 7 teeth in total, 3 on the exhaust and 4 on the inlet, I have reset and tested after tensioning the belt and the engine ran, I still have to reassemble and complete a full start up. Cheers everyone for your advice, I will remember for when I do the water pump to purchase the tooling before hand. Thanks again. |

you are so so lucky, that far out with the timing and cranking it over with the starter motor could have caused major problems? |
