I don't plan on really hardcore offroading with my CRD, but I've got her lifted, may put a locker in the rear sometime for traction, and would like to be able to have a little fun when I go camping, etc. I have some fears about water crossings and such, as I know diesels don't really love water, and there was a report somewhere of timing belt failure with a deep water crossing.

What I would like to know, from those of you who really know the design of this little beast, is the risk associated with any playing around in the water. Jeep says 19" of water fording ability on a Liberty with a trail-rated badge. I'll have another 3 to 3 1/2 inches of additional ground clearance from the lift and slightly oversized tires. Obviously, that gives me around 22-23 inches....if I'm a risk-taker. To be safe, I would most likely try to keep everything to under 19 or 20 inches.

Any thoughts as to the H2O failure points on this truck, and what might happen?? I know there are probably some electrical risks as well, as Chrysler's wiring on this thing looks like it was done by 3rd graders....

Extend your breathers, there is a write up on here, Mine are at the top of the fire wall and fuel filler tube.

Not sure how you come by that 'third-grader' opinion, but the KJ wiring uses positive-locking weather-sealed connectors - of more concern should be the
- fuel tank breather, short hose on top of the fuel tank pickup - should be lengthened up to the fuel filler cap area
- rear diff breather, short hose on the frame rail, should be lengthend up to same area as fuel tank breather (but not combined)
- transfer case breather and transmission case breather, short hose on the upper case, should be combined and lengthened to upper firewall
- plastic fuel line tubing leaks air - should be re-sealed with rubber hose and ss worm-clamps, or install an in-tank fuel pump for a pressurized delivery system, eliminating air-leakage

Wish my green KJ was white.....................

Diesels dont love/hate water any more than any other engine. Just do everything you can to keep water out of the air intake and out of anything that holds oil or fuel.
