Quick question.....I have undetectable leak leaking coolant into my oil extremely slowly. Before I go the removing the head I need to eliminate the EGR cooler and oil cooler. Is it safe to disable coolant from flowing through the EGR cooler and plug off the nipples? I'm running a GDE eco tune.

Thanks in advance.

You might want to check the oil cooler on the passenger side, if you are getting coolant in the oil.

With a GDE tune yes you can delete the coolant flow to the EGR cooler although there is a bit of debate about a) deleting flow entirely and blocking off nipple the EGR side of the block vs. b) deleting flow to the EGR cooler and routing flow from that nipple to where the EGR return flow goes.

That said EGR cooler should not contribute to coolant in oil. Oil cooler maybe but more likely head.

EGR cooler leak will not leak coolant into motor oil period, only into intake or to outside of motor.
Engine oil cooler leaks normally will leak engine oil into the cooling system as engine oil pressure is 3 or 4 times higher that what the coolant pressure runs.
As PAP stated, most likely a leaking head gasket is the source of coolant leaking into your engine oil...
Run a cooling system leak down test. Most good shops know how to do this...

Understood. I did a leak down test a while ago when I first suspected the head gasket and did another at jiffy lube yesterday with the tech, both were negative. Did a coolant flush/swap and what came out was extremely clean. I've never once experienced pressure build up in the overflow tank.

Are you positive it can't seep into the engine from the oil cooler while it's off?

Any other ideas? I had the timing belt, water pump replaced @ 105k. (at 128k now). No external leaks anywhere.

I sincerely appreciate your help guys. I'm about at my wits end with this....

Coolant and oil will leak in either direction depending on which side has the higher pressure at that particular location and point in time. Under normal operating conditions on a warm engine with the engine running the coolant psi ls limited by the radiator cap to IIRC ca. 16psi while the oil runs something like 18-35psi depending on where in the system you are looking. I say that because the coolant system is sealed and under the same system pressure all the time while the oil system is pressurized only upstream of the pump and only then before it hits a drain back location (ex. gravity feed drain back from turbo) and I presume oil pressure is actually somewhat higher when it's being crammed thru small passages. When you turn the engine off oil psi virtually instantly would drop to zero but coolant psi will only drop as it cools down and coolant is drawn back from the overflow tank.

If I am correct in this chain of "logic" then yes coolant could leak into the oil if the oil cooler has an issue but then of course it could also leak at the head under the same conditions.

Odd thought. I know it's hard to get too but in theory would it be possible to detach the oil cooler coolant inflow/outflow lines and LIGHTLY pressurize them to in effect isolate the oil cooler for an oil cooler specific leak down test? I would not want to use too much pressure lest you damage the cooler.

If it could leak coolant into the oil cooler when the engine is off and both systems at basicly at 0 pressure, then it would leak copious amounts of oil into the cooling system when the engine is running and the oil pressure is at normal operating pressure... think about it!
Seen a oil cooler leak on a Cummins one time; it put a bunch of oil in the cooling system real quick!!!
You asked for other ideas! If the HG is not leaking; it could be a cracked head, but it should show up on a pressure leak down test!

How do you know coolant is getting into the oil?
Can you see it on the dipstick?

I'm going with head gasket too.

Check it out.....

I should add that when I do my oil changes i can't see it in the oil.

I would not worry about it if I did not see it, try loosening the plug while the engine is cold and has set overnight, the water should be on the bottom and should drip out of the plug while it still has a few threads holding it in. I am glad I do not get oil analysis.

The lack of water in you oil analysis indicates that only trace amounts of coolant got into the oil.
Therefore, there is no leak in your oil cooler.

Do what you have to do make sure the leak is or isnt in the egr cooler. And while you are at it, double check every coolant hose connection to make sure none of them are leaking.

I was in your situation a few months ago. Chasing leaks. Fixing leaks. And still trying to figure out where my coolant was going. Eventually it became obvious that it was the head gasket.

I agree with flman,
If you are not losing coolant, and your oil does not look like a milkshake on the dipstick, or you do not drain water (coolant) when you first crack open the oil drain plug, you most likely do not have a leak!
Every coolant leak into the oil I have ever worked on, the oil and water mix would make an emulsified foamy mess that looked like a dark milkshake when you pulled the dip stick or drained the oil pan.
Your oil analysis may be simply throwing you a curve?.... :2cents:
