Just a red circle (LED) or does it have an actual symbol? If it is a symbol, that is probably related to the rear speed sensor. The wiring gets weak because it isn't really supported between the body and the rear axle, and the wires break internally. Search on rear wheel abs sensor and you should find stuff about it.

Plain red light next to the fuel gauge is the sentry key/security alarm indicator. According to the manual, if the light remains on after the bulb check, there is a problem with the electronics. See page 16 of the 2005 manual.

My 2002 Export CRD has an amber light inside the fuel gauge that indicates low fuel...about 12 Litres left.

I have a red LED below the cluster which indicates that the anti-theft is armed...if I lock the doors using the key-fob remote then unlock the driver's door with the key the alarm goes off.

The SKIS system that uses a chipped key to start the engine on my 2002 model has an amber "Key" symbol with a slash through it...on the left of the cluster. Later year models...probably yours included...changed from a Key symbol to a red LED on the left of the cluster. Normally if this Key symbol or red LED stays ON all the time then the engine will turn over but not start...if it flashes all the time the engine will start but will cut out after a few seconds...I presume you are not having any of these issues!

Does your UK model have an Occupant sensor inside the cabin in the center of the roof?
I do not have the Service Manual for the 2004 model...only 2003 or 2005...I will read through the 2005 Manual as it sounds like your model is closer to the 2005 specs.

there is an amber light with a key in the instrument cluster - this does not come on as well as this red light. As the week has progressed I have found that locking the car with the key fob then unlocking it puts the red light out. It always starts and runs fine - I changed fobs , this seemed to work for a while - but came back on for the wife tonight .
The brakes are sticking pretty badly too - warming things up - priced up new pistons seals and boots for the calipers - not too scary - has anyone done this ? or do you normally put new calipers on ?
Any help is much appreciated - this red light is a worry - we are supposed to be going caravanning in 3 weeks.
Thanks again Dave P
ps the abs light got less frequent and Ive not seen it for 2 days.

The red light is probably part of the anti-theft system as it does turn ON/OFF with the key fob but why it comes ON by itself with no alarm is a bit weird.

The Export models also have a "Hood Closed Sensor" which is a plunge switch on the right side of the engine...next to the airfilter...aiming upwards. This senses if someone is trying to force the hood open while all the doors are locked and would normally set off the alarm. There have been problems reported with this switch jamming or failing. You could try disconnect the plug on the switch and see if your mystery red light no longer comes ON....this would of course disable this part of the security system but it is worth disconnecting it for a while! :?
