Post subject:  Front CV Joints vs Hub Bearing Sound

On a 4WD Jeep Liberty, what is the difference in sound(s) between a bad front drive axle CV and a bad hub bearing?

Thanks in advance.

In my experience, the CV will give you clacking noises when you are maneuvering in 4wd, while front hubs are more like a constant roaring hummmm that varies in relation to speed regardless of the drive mode.

Suggest you grease the hubs through the ABS sensor hole and see if that helps with the noise. Here's a post that might help:

I just started to get a whirring/groaning sound between like 20 and 55mph. Once I get above 55 it goes away. Would this likely be the front drive shaft CV? I was hoping it wouldnt be the hubs since i just did the brakes.

Whelp, I pulled the front shaft and i still have the noise and vibration so i guess thats out. Hmmmm, hubs, tires, front half shafts, rear driveshaft. Crap.

The weird thing is that my MPG's dont seem to have changed.
