Post subject:  Jeep is making a mess after filling up

So i got my jeep back from its engine overhaul and I have been loving it, for the most part. Im sorting out a' number of little issues, over/under boost, head lights turning off for a second, and the jeep taking a pee on the ground after I fill it up (how rude!).

The biggest question I have is what is the fix? Anytime I fill up the jeep now I have to go slow or it will spit a bunch back up, and it seems that from the top of the tank (tank breather maybe?) It drips a bunch of fuel out. I plan on dropping the tank at some point in the not so distant future to install a lift pump, but id like to get a game plan for fixing it.

Thanks!

Also if you have any input on the other stuff feel free to throw it in the mix.

I'd like to find out where it leaks from? It's the fuel tank cap, where the fuel lines come from? If so, has the tank been ever dropped for service? I think you should lower it and install the in tank pump and see if the ring that secures the line assembly to the tank is property screwed. You can also try crawling under the jeep and see where is the leak from. Does it leak when you fill up or only when driving with full tank?

It leaks right after the jeep is done filling up and will continue to drip while driving with a full tank. Its coming from the area near the filler neck/ filler breather and running down the sides of the tank.

If I over-fill my fuel tank, fuel will come dripping out of the breather valve at the top of the tank.
Does not happen every time I fill up.

solution: dont over fill your fuel tank

or you could drop the tank and attach a vent hose and route that hose to a higher elevation.

I'm not trying to over fill the tank, I'm going till it clicks once.

The Diesel fuel cap is sealed and vented for +\- 2"hg, or 1psi - the 2-way vent valve in the cap may be faulty and is dumping fuel

- or -

The filler hose clamp or vent hose clamp may be loose - possibly the fuel tank had been dropped for one reason or another

If this just started to leak, I'd go with gmctd #1, if it's something that had been happening for a while, I'd go with #2. Anyways, if you plan an in tank pump, you'll have to drop the tank anyways, so fixing it then would be easier.

It pretty much starts leaking after the pump stops, before the cap is even on it. But it wouldn't surprise me if the cap is also not doing its part. Ill look into getting a new filler cap, and will investigate the tank once its on the ground. Till then ill just keep it around 3/4 full

some folks had problems with the top vent valve

this was the only comment I remember

If you try to "fill it to the neck" it will usually vent out through the tank.

Just fill it until the pump stops and then round up to the next dollar and you shouldn't have any leakage. If you do, replace your fuel cap first. After that, I would recommend dropping the tank and checking the vent.
