I have just brought a 2005 Cherokee 2.8 CRD 52,000ml, it has a noisy pulley on the serpentine belt, it is the one above the air con pump I think I am right that's what it is?, I think it is an idler should I change it and the tensioner pulley also, I am fitting a new belt also.

Thank's

Joohn

Odds are its either the alt decoupler or the tensioner. If it's the decoupler look down while idling, the tensioner will be bouncing. There will also be red dust behind the dust cover. The idlers should last longer but def don't rule them out. If your not certain, try taking the belt off and spinning each part by hand to see if you can feel/hear a difference

Also it could be the fan clutch. The stock ones are junk and are known to go out

I will have a look and listen to them tomorrow.

the price difference of the pulleys is amazing, cheep is £17 and expensive £120 all different makes, which make is best?

I see video's just changing the pulley will the spring part need changing too?

If your going through the hassle, change the entire tensioner. Go mopar and I'm not sure on the part number

I have just been listening to it, I think it is the aircon that may be the source of the noise, I took out the aircon fuse some time ago as it is low on gas, the noise is only at tick-over, and the belt coming from the AC pulley to the fan pulley is whipping in time with the noise, the tension pulley is wooing in time too.

If it is the AC bearing can I change it?

That sounds more like the alternator decoupler. The bouncing belt is the tell tale sign.

All fixed, took the Alternator to a repair shop and he fitted a new one for £70 that's $108.

seems strange that the decupler is only rated to last 40,000 to 60,000 miles, not good enough realy.

thanks again for your help :-)r

I agree that the decoupler is not good enough.
Apparently you can get a Litens decoupler that is actually a greased sealed unit...not a dry unit like the standard coupler.
The pulley on the Litens is apparently slighter smaller in outer diameter but it works fine....I need to try source one for myself here in South Africa before my original decoupler goes!
