2005 2.8 CRD, I've owned it for 9 years, had the odd problem, but nothing severe. This morning, I started it , ran for a couple of seconds and then stopped. Electrics fine, I turned the key - starter just turned over but no engine. Left it for a couple of minutes, then it started up and ran without a problem. Now its never done this before, so I'm wondering a) air in fuel (never a problem before) or b) cam or crank sensor I'll be off again around Germany and Austria again at the end of September for a couple of weeks so I'd like to get it sorted asap. As I'm in the final stage of organising my mother's funeral for Monday, I could do without the extra hassle. Thanks for any input. Adrian |

Do you get fuel pressure when turning the engine over. I too had a similar issue just last week. Went out for lunch, returned. Came back to jeep after work, would crank but not start. I had already purchased a crank sensor, as a back up, or just in case sensor. Went over fuel system quickly. No air, no leaks. I could watch fuel rail pressure on torque pro. After three cranks pressure was reaching 6000psi. Took a chance, replaced sensor. Fired right up. FYI no fault codes were in system. Hope this helps. Good luck. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk |

Hi Scott and thanks for the reply. No idea about the fuel pressure and I don't have the tool to measure it. I've ordered the sensor from IDParts - is it difficult to replace? |

Sounds exactly like air in the fuel. Do you have the original fuel head or the upgraded? If you don't know, order the upgraded and install it. |

Original, and I have ordered the upgraded version from idparts. Its the first time I've had this happen in 9 years, so I'll replace the crank and cam sensors as well, just to be sure. I'll have the dealer check the injectors as well at the next service/ Ministry check in September. |

Great timing. I think you answered your own question pretty concisely. I thought we got the later heads anyway with our vintage and being Export (we got the leftovers). However, head may need replacing as a wear issue? Unlikely. Just suggest you remember the quick-connects may need replacing with barbs - don't recall you've done them but it's been over a long time. Don't recall you've written about an in tank or near tank pusher pump either? Not what you want to be thinking about just now. Also obvious I know but does a fuel bleed help you at all? Certainly the sensors you name could well be the next most likely candidates. How long since you changed the fuel filter? In one of our diesel 4WD publications articles re avoiding issues with CRD's (all marques) this has recently been mooted as a stand-out issue with the CRD's for protecting the pump, injectors and other. I know you service well so I suspect I'm wasting letters here. Cheers and sincere ....you know. Will pm in a while my friend. |

Hi Auberon. The Mk2 head apparently has a blue plug for the heater, while the Mk1 has a yellow internal - I have the Mk1! I haven't done the quick connects yet, as I haven't had the problem before(if its not broke etc...). For the same reason, I haven't done the pump either, although a Facet pusher will now be on the shopping list! As it started cleanly after a few minutes, I didn't check the fuel bleed. I changed the filter at last year's service, and was planning to change it at the end of this month, but the new head will take care of that:) Thanks and I look forward to the pm |

Crank sensor took 2hrs on my back. Do a search and follow instructions. One thing about this engine, bolts come out clean. Can you pump up your fuel head? Does the plunger stiffen up after a few pumps. If it does the engine should start, at least for a few seconds. If the plunger is hard, and it still doesn't start, doesn't even try... Replace the crank sensor. Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk |

Thanks Scott. The engine has been fine since this incident, but I just take it as a warning shot! I'll replace the head and sensors as soon as I can after they're delivered. |
