Sometime about a year ago my CRD went dead, my Dad was driving it in NOVA where my parents lived at the time. They had just purchased a new Escape he was going to drive the CRD back here to CO for me. Within about 6 driving hours of then purchasing a new vehicle the CRD died.

My Dads description at the time "I was driving it along when all of a sudden it started running very rough, barely able to move, and the low coolant light came on. I limped it the block back to the apartment and parked it."

Since they weren't really in a good place to deal with it I had no idea what was wrong, and we were in a tough spot to try and diagnose it. I wasn't sure if we should just give up and scrap it or what. We lucked out, my Mom got a job in socal that came with paid relocation which included moving 2 vehicles, I was able to get the CRD returned to me in Colorado for no charge. It was dropped off last October. It's been sitting in my driveway since then. I think sometime last December I did some basic checking and saw that it was blowing out back out the intake - like in the case of failed rockers.

Today I finally got the bug to fix it, and more importantly the free time. I have been working in Israel the past month so I have this week off. I poured some water in and was able to see that it was leaking from around the water pump. I pulled apart the front end and got the timing belt cover off........

The water pump bearings gave out leading to some slop, which chewed a belt up pretty good. I can freely turn the exhaust cam 180 degrees before hitting resistance. I'm going to pull the valve cover tomorrow and check everything out there. If it all checks out OK I will order a set of rockers and a belt kit and get this stuff replaced. If the timing is nice I can get parts before the weekend and get it running before I have to leave again for work.

Wow, that's something new. How many miles were on your CRD when this happened?

I think I'm around 155k, I would have to go hookup the battery to double check the speedo.

I did the timing belt at 100k, but I did not do the water pump. There is a lesson in there!

I replaced my water pump at 160,000 miles. It still seemed to be in good condition.
But I'm glad I did it.

Sir Sam, this is the exact same failure my Liberty succumbed to at 118k. Water pump poo'd itself.

Thanks again for posting your videos on YouTube. It's what gav me the nerve to jump in and go for it!

I pulled the valve cover off, looks like the rocker broke nice and clean. My rollers are still perfect, zero play!

My intake plenum is also pretty clean, I guess thats what ORM and EHM for the past ten years will do for ya.

Well, at least them rockers failed correctly.

The rockers are the only system I've seen on the CRD that have performed perfectly every time to protect the valves.

The pictures of the timing belt area though... WOW that is the worst I've ever seen. At least you are the other most experienced person to work on this. You should have it running again shortly after the parts arrive.

Ya no kidding, I really ought to do a leakdown test just to be sure before I throw in new parts, but I suspect valvetrain is OK.

ARP it if you're in that far.

Especially if you're going to keep it.

I am surprised you didn't notice any loss of coolant prior to this....... The pictures indicate that it was going on for quite a while..

I hesitate to proffer unsolicited advice to you, Sam, but *I* think that a one by one replacement of bolts with studs makes sense. You are already in there.........

It's hard to notice a loss of coolant from 1700 miles away.

Sam, Im thinking the next time my TB cover comes off or if I get frisky I am going to machine a inspection port on top of the back cover plate. Just thinking it could be another part of my routine maintenance to pull the rubber plug and scope the condition of the belt. Should really be an easy MOD.

Any how good luck and happy wrenching.

I like that idea a lot, especially an inspection port by the tensioner to keep an eye on it as well

I'm way ahead of you guys - The outer cover on mine will be cut straight across, just below the cam pulleys. Then you can leave it off or remove to inspect and not lose the dust protection at the bottom. The outer cover isn't really usable for much other than a dust seal anyway.

Go one step further and make it transparent :P

I've thought about that, truly. The formed section in the middle is the hard part, otherwise I'd be all about a piece of clear lexan. Maybe when I get the engine running again, that will be the next thing.
