Hi all, having issues with my CRD and hopefully someone has encountered a similar case before.

I recently did the timing belt, water pump and rockers, and after couple of days of normal driving, suddenly it won't start anymore (no crank)... but sometimes it starts just fine.

- When trying to start the engine, I hear the starter "click" once and then stop. If I keep the key on starting position, it will click again every 2 seconds and just keep doing it.
- Battery or starter are not the issue.
- I can start the engine by turning the key to ignition and jumping pins 30 and 87 on the starter relay.
- Pin #85 gets solid ground and pin #86 gets battery voltage when turning key to start position.
- It starts normally (using the key) if I jump pin #85 of the starter relay to ground (with relay in place). This resolves the problem but does not fix it.
- I've switched the starter and ASD relays, and several fuses I've read in other posts, same results.
- Tried in Neutral and Parking (as suggested below), same results.

Any advice is highly appreciated. I plan to check the grounds to the PCM tomorrow, I may have left a lose ground on the intake or elsewhere... any thoughts where to look?

Thanks,
Andrés

I have an export CRD, 06. It's called Cherokee in my country.

Thanks,
Andrés

Which country are you in? LHD or RHD?
Manual or Automatic.?

If it is an automatic, try starting it in "Neutral" instead of "Park"....the Interlock for the "Park" position may be faulty...... jumpering pin 85 to ground over rides the two interlocks.

LHD 2006 CRDs have a known problem of the harness being trapped behind the Fuel Filter Head Mounting Bracket..if you have a LHD then remove the bracket and check for harness damage in that area.

You can download the 2006 KJ Service Manual here...includes circuit diagrams...if you do not already have them!

It could be a problem with the ignition switch. They are known to break.

Thanks for replying. I'm in Costa Rica and its LHD, Automatic, I should add these details to my signature.
I tried in both neutral and parking and it's the same. The starting signals seem to be present and have good voltage, but starter would only click unless I jump ground to pin #85, that's why I think the PCM is not getting good ground.

Is there a way to check the ignition switch without removing it?

Thanks.

not sure the best location, but you can at least stab a wire and test the ignition switch that way. You'll have to look up the pin numbers.

Update: I found one of the 3 grounds that go to the PCM had some resistance, so I cleaned 2 ground points on the chassis and changed the connector in another that goes behind the engine, and so far so good. Seems the issue was poor ground, even if you see 12v, does not mean it's getting all the juice :5SHOTS:

probably not important now but there is also a switch on steering column that failed on one of my crds when kids had it at college (I never saw it) but it wouldn't start at all it wasn't an intermittent problem though that dosen't mean it couldn't be. Posted mainly for future readers of this thread.

Yeah, there's an upgraded part to replace the cheap stock one, I think Dorman makes it? My dang puppy chewed mine up before I got it installed
