Hey I'm new here guys but, I've just had problems after problems with my Liberty. I've sent it to multiple shops etc.
Well it's over heating while towing (found out it needs a fan clutch) it used to throw an overboost code and go into limp mode if I floored it for any amount of time. Had a shop check everything and they said the cam timing was off, adjusted it and then they didn't even bother putting a new timing belt in while they were in there :banghead: fixed that, but if I gradually get on the gas it'll pick up speed but of I put the thing to the floor it doesn't want to go anywhere at all, I'll have it at 3-4k rpm's and it barely picks up speed. :5SHOTS: hills are a nightmare while towing because the rpm's go up so high and it doesn't really go anywhere :l
I have a lot of money into it, looks awesome on the outside but I need the internals functioning lol. Plans are to tow with it to ride fourwheeler about 2 hours away. But it just can't seem to handle it, barely itself let alone added weight.

The shop said all the turbo hoses are fine. (Used zimmies diesel in lancaster PA, supposed to be one of the best diesel shops on the east coast)

Was going to put the GDE turbo in it along with tranny tune, egr block off kit, (trannys about to drop; kicks in 2nd pretty hard) so upgraded transmission to handle the towing.
Separate tranny cooler, etc.

Also when I pulled the cover off to the left of the injectors on the left side of the engine; what I believe is the ccv hose, the black plastic piece is like leaking oil all around it. Idk if that would be a problem?

Its really hard to say whats going on with your CRD.

Based on your descriptions I say you have a transmission problem.
If your engine is above 3000 rpm and you are not picking up speed, that tells me that the power is not getting to the rear wheels.

Scan for codes and tell us what they are.

I've scanned it a couple times before and the shops have and nothing comes up except those overboost codes and when I had the maf sensor unplugged.
Well it deffinetly kicks into all 5 gears, it just seems like I run out of power. I'm going to go over the hoses myself. I replaced map sensor (the old one got so caked so fast I clean it constantly) replaced boost solenoid, etc.

It also usually rolls coal excessivy; I've been told by some people that it's blue and white sometimes but when I look all I see is black? I believe it was doing that because it was running cold.

I'm no expert on these CRD's, but I'm learning more every day. It really sounds like a turbo issue to me. I would double check the CAC hoses and make sure the shop didn't miss a tear, hole, loose clamp or even a very porous section in the hose. Pull the hose going from the airbox to the turbo while you're messing with them and wiggle the impeller on the turbo to check for play. it should move forward and backward just a very slight amount and side to side almost imperceptibly.

Improper boost or improper fuel delivery would cause black smoke. If there are no noticeable problems with the turbo side of things, bleed the fuel filter head if you haven't done it recently. Report how many times you have to bleed it to get all the air out (I'm assuming you don't have a lift pump). If that doesn't help, then it could be air in the fuel rail, or I could be completely wrong. Luckily, none of my recommendations are terribly hard to do and are good things to do occasionally anyway.

Good luck!

I seriously doubt it has anything to do with the turbo. It sounds like you are in limp mode. The high revving and lack of overall power are the keys, and this shop that "adjusted" the timing... Did they have the proper tools to actually do it RIGHT or were they guessing? You cannot just adjust the pulleys, you have to have the pins and the knowledge to be able to line everything up. From what you are describing, especially if the timing was more than just a little bit out, you are probably looking at some broken rockers too.

If the turbo is actually bad, the CRD is basically immovable. Really, it is un-drivable without the turbo. Same for the transmission, and why look to upgrade the transmission when it is possibly the strongest component in the entire drivetrain? That transmission has put up with people towing over 8000 lbs with this engine, and the same transmission is mounted behind the big Hemi V8 that is pushing twice the HP that our motor can develop.

Where are you located? I'm guessing you are near Lancaster PA based on your comment of going to a shop there. Lucky for you, I am the travelling specialist for these, and while I'm not next door, I am closer to you right now than I will be in another few days - I'm halfway up NC about to go tomorrow to Wilmington for a CRD, and I could potentially drive up to you for the weekend. It would be a bit short notice to get all the parts in, but it can be done, and can be done RIGHT. Your CRD moves under its own power, that is a major positive. Everything else is fixable.

Well it's deffinetly not in limp mode. I've had it in limp mode many times and it's undriveable. I know diesels lose their torque at high RPM's but it just seems like to much torque loss.
Low RPMs and before I hit 5th there is all kinds of power and it moves up quick. But while I'm towing this can be sucky because I need to go highway speeds. Maybe the GDE trans towing tune would fix this problem?
Upgraded tranny as in fix what's wrong with it, I know they had problems with the torque converter and also was going to put the shift kit in it. It feels like it may go anyway.

How much weight are you towing and how fast are you trying to get up these hills?

Small trailer and 2 quads. Maybe like 2000 lbs? More or less. And the one big hill on my way back from riding speed is 60, but I was trying to take it at 45-50 and it over heated (fan clutch) and towing while on highway with cruise on, Gatta be careful cause any stupid little grade it'll kick it into a low gear and rev almost to the red.

Firstly if it was in limp mode you wouldn't be driving it above 60mph plus you'd have codes from the TCM.

2000lb is nothing for this vehicle. You should barely notice it. Are you're problems exclusively while towing or do you also see them to a lesser degree when unloaded?

So at 60mph you're in the hysteresis loop between 4th and 5th so you could be in either gear. A touch faster and you'd be in 5th for sure and a touch slower you'd definitely be in 4th. Either way, however, the TC should be locked at these speeds so your rpm should be proportional to road speed.

If you're getting the rpm up to 3-4K you've got to be going going pretty fast? Les's assume you're in 5th, you should be getting appx 1mph for about every 28.5rpm so at 3K you'd have to be going 3000/28.5 = 105mph! My guess would be that the TC is not locking or severely slipping but I'm surprised that the TCM is not detecting this condition?

Ok, I see.

First,
Towing with the cruise on is not a good idea.
Yes, lots of people do it but you just experienced one reason why not to. When towing, you can manage the throttle a lot better than the cruise control.

Second,
Towing in 5th gear up a hill is not a good idea either. I understand wanting to keep up with traffic but sometimes you just gotta slow down. Under heavy load in 5th gear the torque converter clutch will unlock and the transmission will downshift. RPMs will go way high and you wont go any faster because of too much load. Its like the transmission is protecting itself and saving the overdrive clutches from burning up.

Here is a tip:
When you see the hill approaching, prepare yourself.
Slow down to about 50-55 and turn the O/D-off. The transmission will downshift to 3rd and the torque converter clutch will lock.
You can now accelerate up the hill to about 60mph. RPMs will still be high but this is much more manageable than having the OD-on.
You can also try slowing down to 50-55 and keep the OD-on. Is this state the transmission will be in 4th gear with the TC clutch locked. From here you can only accelerate up to 59mph because once you get above 60 the transmission will shift into 5th.

Towing with the CRD requires you to anticipate actions before going up hills.
You need to act before the transmission overreacts.

I think you would be a good candidate for the transmission tune.
Assuming, of course, that your torque converter is still in good shape.

Wouldn't putting it off OD put it in a lower gear forcing the RPMs to go up though?
I do try to take it easy going up them.

Yes, thats exactly what I typed.
Or you can try to hold it in 4th with OD-on but below 60mph, which should be right around 2000rpm.

Yeah, this is a good point. The speed control has been poorly designed. My guess is that they took the algorithm from the gasser and didn't adjust the loop gains to account for the different plant response of the CRD. It's not too bad on the flat but given a gradient or any additional loading it goes unstable. Another piece of quality design brought to you by our friends at Chrysler.

Lesser degree when unloaded as well, well let's say I floor it to make a quick pass on the highway or something or even on the road (unloaded), if I'm already at around 50-60mph it barely picks up speed, I pick up more speed at partial throttle, if I put it to the floor it barely creeps up. I've never been able to get it past 80.

This poor acceleration happens on flat roads and while pulling no trailer?

I don't know what your driving style is or what you are expecting when accelerating from 50mph or above. But...

What you are describing sounds like limp mode.
But its ENGINE limp mode, not transmission limp mode.
I had the same experience with poor acceleration when I was having fuel rail pressure problems.
But if you are having fuel system problems there should definitely be a code to identify that.

You mentioned earlier that you were getting a overboost code.
That may be the source of your problem.

Overboost was caused by cam timing being off, it runs way better than it did before they fixed that; I have a bit of a lead foot. With that overboost I couldn't do any wide open throttle, and that really did put it in limp mode. Would throw a cel and it would completely shut the turbo off and I couldn't go over 20 mph. So no it's not in limp mode; as it would completely not allow me to do anything.

PRETTY sure I found my problem..
So me and my buddy stayed up late tonight to get the fan clutch put in and all went well and easy, and then pull out to go home and it started billowing white smoke; the more i reved the worse it got. We had checked the turbo hoses and cleaned out the one coming from the air cooler (dropping in oil) and then after that white smoke I limped back to my garage pulled the hoses again and the oil was back worse then ever. turbo seals went and it would explain why I've constantly had fill up on oil. Going to have a shop check for head gasket /ring problems before buying a new one.
