this may not be the correct forum for this question but since i have been pricing parts for my crd i posted here.

i need to replace my rear upper control arm bushings. went to the parts store and i can buy them for about 100$. the same parts store sells the entire control arm with bushings and ball joint for just over 200. then i checked a jeep parts website. they want 180 for the control arm. then i went to rock auto.....they want about 90 bucks for it. i started checking other parts. most of them are priced half of what they are at my local parts store. i mean its a substantial amount of money that can be saved here. are the parts of good quality? what explains why they are way under the competition?

I have purchased thousands of dollars of parts from Rockauto over the past 10+ years. They have great customer service and excellent prices. The parts they sell are the same as sold by others for le$$. But remember, you get what you pay for. If you buy the cheapest parts available in their catalog, you'll likely get low quality parts that won't last. For example, I purchase Wagner ThermoQuiet brake pads from Rockauto. ThermoQuiets definitely aren't their cheapest, but I get excellent service from them and RockAuto has the best price that I have found on those pads.

for the rear upper control arm -

you have a choice of Chinese or Mopar

Chinese is about 1/2 the price of Mopar

and they last less than 1/2 the time

Rock Auto sells both - they do have reasonable prices on everything -and great service

but the same things - they are not 1/2 the price

Rock auto is very reputable. They will list each brand so you know if your buying "Chinese" or brand name. They are usually always cheaper on stuff since they have multiple huge warehouses.

As a person who has purchased auto parts from NAPA "on account" for several companies I've worked for, I can tell you that there is a full retail profit margin that they charge walk-in non-account customers that runs about 40-60% over what a person with an account pays, with the idea that the "list price" is what that person will charge a customer on the finished job invoice. The parts really aren't that expensive to make, it's just marketing and profit margins. RockAuto just charges you what NAPA calls the "jobber price" or account holder price. Since I can get that price through the company I work for, oftentimes NAPA is comparable or cheaper because of freight costs. Often though Rockauto can get a part NAPA can't or is still cheaper. Like posted previously, just keep an eye on the part's brand. Chinese/Yugoslavian crap is crap no matter where you buy it.

I've done quite a bit of business with Rock Auto over the years too. One thing to watch is their shipping cost. Some things are just expensive for them to ship. Brake drums, for example, are generally cheaper at O'Reilly after you factor in shipping. Another problem can be their multiple warehouses. Their prices might be really good, but once you get 1 part from warehouse A, 1 part from B, and 1 part from C, shipping can be higher than the part cost.

But if you group your order right (or watch for close outs) you can get some pretty good deals. I have spare wiper blades for all 4 of my vehicles at an average cost of $2 each. :D

I buy a lot of car parts off RockAuto and basically always have a 5% off coupon in my email begging me to buy more. As stated before, just watch your shipping prices and which warehouse you are getting parts from. If you can keep them all grouped together things typically work out well. Also they stock many different brands so you can make sure you get exactly what you are looking for.
