History: 2006 CRD, 100,000 km on engine, timing belt was replaced, something went wrong and resulted in broken tappets and smashed valves in #3 cylinder. Engine was removed, recon head installed, lock pins were used to lock camshafts and crank during assembly. Engine turns over, has oil pressure, fuel in the fuel rail but no start. Checked all harness connections, turned 2 injectors upside down hooked up to harness and fuel: no fuel coming out when cranking. Checked connection on Crank sensor and cam sensors and look OK, no codes coming up. Switch connection on rear fuel rail and #4 injector are not reversed. I am stuck and have no more leads to go on. Any thoughts are much appreciated ! |

Start by bleeding the air out of the fuel rail. Crack open the #1 injector line. Crank engine until fuel drips out. Tighten the line back up. Also, check for a blown ASD fuse or bad ASD relay. |

Air was bled from #1 injector, good fuel with no bubbles. Can you explain what "ASD" means? Thanks |

Also you can have enough charge on the battery to turn the engine over, but not enough for the ECU to allow a start. Battery could be low or in just bad enough shape to cause this. Sometimes people get this mystery no start condition and the battery just needs replaced... |

Thanks I have no clue what ASD means but both items are labeled inside the power distribution box in front of the battery. I know for a fact that a blown ASD fuse = engine crank but wont start. And a bad relay will behave in a similar manner. |

The ASD Relay is the Auto Shutdown Relay.....when you turn the ignition OFF this relay drops out and kills everything. The relay will not energize if the SKIS anti-theft system is installed but not energized properly by the chipped ignition key. First thing is to swap this relay over with an identical one next to it inside the relay/fuse box under the hood. Check all fuses inside the cabin and under the hood. If the SKIS red LED is ON all the time on the cluster then it means the chipped code was received by the ECM correctly but the ECM gets feedback that the ASD relay has not energized. If the red LED flashes all the time then the ECM was not happy with the chipped code it received...the engine will turn over and run for a few seconds then cut out. The 2006 LHD CRD has a known problem that the wire harness can be trapped behind the Fuel Filter Head Mounting Bracket which can cause wires to be chaffed to chassis...remove this bracket and inspect the wiring there for damage. The crankshaft sensor and the camshaft sensor can fail and will stop the injectors from firing. |

thanks so much, I will follow these leads up this weekend and post the outcome. Thanks again |

- checked battery voltage, it does not drop below 10.5V while cranking, before cranking battery is recharged to 100% - checked fuse ASD fuse and relay: OK - checked the wire harness before the fuel filter and there is some chafing taking place however no broken or exposed wires were found - cranking speed seems OK similar as before. - fuel rail has clear fuel w/o air - there appears to be good compression when turning over No smoke coming from exhaust suggesting no fuel coming from the injectors. This engine was running well until the timing went out and it destroyed the head, cams and crank locked with proper timing ins during assembly I am stuck and have no more leads, any help is appreciated. |

Probably a bad crank sensor then. Do a search. There have been many discussions about the symptoms of a bad crank sensor. |

My bet is that it's the wiring for one of the sensors. They get wrenched around pretty good during the process. Flash probably has the best knowledge about testing that they are getting proper voltage and returning an appropriate signal. I'd just use one of those spikey meter leads to bite the wires to check them. The fuel pressure sensor seems to be a common place, and it's wires get wrenched the worst. I think it's supposed to return 5 Volts. Cleaning the connections and making sure there are no bent or pushed pins is probably a better next step though. |

oh, and triple check the air temp sensor on the air box as it's really stubborn to make contact, and I think it will cause this. |

Throwing this out there. Injectors are in the same spots, right? You marked them and put them back correctly, right? |

Any codes at all? You sure the SKIM LED on the cluster is not ON all the time? Checked all fuses under the hood and inside the cabin? I would replace the cam and crank sensor now. Then I would remove the ASD Relay and briefly jumper pins 30 and 87 together inside the ASD relay socket to see what happens...something could be stopping the ASD relay from energizing and that stops the ECM from firing the injectors! Could be a serious wiring problem....you would need to download the Service Manual with the Wiring Diagram and trace the wiring around with a Multi meter but you would need to know your Electronics |

Are you sure the cam position sensor is plugged into the cam position sensor? You can transpose 2 plug-ins back there pretty easily. |

Hexus wrote: Are you sure the cam position sensor is plugged into the cam position sensor? You can transpose 2 plug-ins back there pretty easily. Yeah, but Hexus means the fuel pressure solenoid on the end of the rail near the cam sensor. Try swapping that plug with the nearby fuel injector plug |
