I'm in the middle of purchasing a 2006 CRD, I'll have it Saturday. I live in Brooklyn though and can't have my car sitting on the street without a computer. I think I read here that I can get an ecu on ebay and you guys can tune it up and alI have to do is swap it out.

Is that true and any advice on picking one up?

Fratichelli - Welcome to the family!

If your new CRD needs a timing belt or any other critical services, save my name and contact me - I come up to the city fairly often, and I will actually be coming up before the end of January, going right to Brooklyn - Ralph Ave. Hit me up if you need anything done, and make CERTAIN that your new CRD has a fresh timing belt and doesn't have ceramic glow plugs anymore. The mileage doesn't matter anymore on the belts, they are *all* way overdue on age alone now if they haven't already been changed.

Yes, I had so many issues with my 2002 that I decided to double down and get a CRD.

The dealer had all the maintenance records and no timing belt history, so I put a deposit down and negotiated them to replace the timing belt before delivery. They've had it a week and now said it won't be ready until Saturday. So, I'm thinking they had some problems.

I'll definitely contact you, but I don't have a driveway in Brooklyn.

The beauty - I don't need anything more than any average parking space. I can do the big stuff even parallel parked - as long as it isn't a sweep zone! :P

The skill level of the average dealership and your report suggests that they have indeed had issues... I hope they haven't screwed up the timing bad enough to need to replace the rockers, but that is the usual result of a badly done timing job. Let me know if you need assistance, and I'd be happy to look it over next time I'm up there if you want me to.

Any input on how to get a spare ecu for the GDE tune?

Your most cost effective option for an ECM is a bone yard or maybe ebay, e.g. this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/ENGINE-COMPUTER-JEEP-LIBERTY-2005-56044562CC-0281011476-ECU-ECM-PCM-OEM-/351599499675?hash=item51dcf6999b:g:M3cAAOSwnH1WZtIt&vxp=mtr is not far from you.

If you're only concerned about down time you could always purchase the programming tool.

Keith used to also do tool rental and, IIRC, module swapping though that was maybe just for the TCM.

Anyway, I'd suggest you contact him directly to find out what options are available today..

DirtMover,
Thanks for the advice and links. There are two reasons I want and extra computer; I like the idea of being able to return it to stock for Smog inspection reasons and in case I need to resell, second I don't even have a driveway so flashing the computer using a laptop on battery power and using a wifi outside seems a little too risky for me.

Once I receive the CRD the first thing I am going to do is get the computer flashed since that seems like the best bang for the buck as far as upgrades.

No need to swap out the GDE tune for inspection, actually you will be much more likely to pass any smog check because it makes it run cleaner, and that's the only visual effect.
I bet you can purchase it at the Christmas price and send it off when you get it, or put GDE as the shipping address for the used ECU.

The GDE programming tool meets both your requirements. It can hold up to 3 tunes so you can easily switch between stock and 2 other tunes at will. The programmer is completely self contained and doesn't require a laptop connected to it at the time you flash or read the ECM.

When you receive the programmer you take it to your vehicle and use it to read your ECM
Next you bring the tool inside, connect it to your laptop and download your stock tune to your laptop and email the file to GDE
They will take the vehicle specific information from it and create a custom tune for your vehicle
When you receive the file back from GDE, usually a few hours, you simply connect the programmer back up to your computer and upload the new tune to it.
Finally bring the programmer, without laptop, out to your vehicle, plug it into the OBD port and flash your new tune

A second, used, ECM will cost a little bit less but switching tunes is not as easy and if you want to switch from ECO to HOT in future you can do this by simply getting Keith to email you the new tune.

The only downside I see is that having a spare ECM could be useful in the unlikely event have a failure.

I'd go with the programmer, personally. It also can be used as a code reader, and it "marries" to the specific CRD, so that you can sell it as an added value item when you decide to sell someday.

It can read codes from any car though - only the tunes are "married" to one specific vehicle.

Also - the number of ECU failures can be counted on one hand. That is an extremely rare thing to worry about, highly unlikely that it will ever happen to you.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I think I will go for the programmer. I will get one during the sale, but I'm still waiting on the dealer to deliverr. Now it's a clock spring that's on back order.

Does anyone know if there are back orders on clock springs?

So its $300 for the tune or $400 as the site says?

"Other features include linear fuel gauge"

I see it's listed as a headline feature now. It used to only be for the '05. I wonder if they managed to sort it out for the '06 as well?

I still wouldn't say it's perfect on the 06, but it's a heck of a lot better than before the tune. There was a huge hockey stick prior, it's not so bad now.

So...can i use the software and programmer at the top of the linked thread to save my original tune and after loading the GDE tune, save it, then switch between the two (stored on my laptop at that point) without having to buy the $195 programmer from GDE?
