So, I just moved into an area where things get cold and I'd like to utilize my block heater. It gets around zero here BTW. I think if I set a timer for an hour before I should be OK. Without using the heater, at 0-15 I give the glow plugs at least 10 seconds but it is sluggish. But never let me down.

I changed to the newer fuel filter style, but I haven't done the filter wiring for the heater. Would that make a difference?

Cold weather advice?

Remember this tip about block heaters; if your engine is cold soaked to ambient temp, it will heat up when plugged in at a rate of 10 degrees per hour. If it's zero out and you plug in an hour before you want to start, the engine has only warmed to approximately 10 degrees.

I say allow at least 4 hours and your engine will thank you for it.

Do you have the original Ceramic Glow Plugs?

I ask because, on my Etecno's, anything colder than 15*F with no block heater mine takes about 2-5 solid minutes of cranking and sputtering before the head gets hot enough to allow consistent combustion.

I recently had a discussion on this forum regarding the same issue. Since then my best results have come when plugging in the block heater while the engine is still warm. I'll leave it on overnight and it cranks over and fires just as it would on a 60 degree day. The temperatures I have been in are between 10-30 degrees.

Here is the link to that discussion: http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=83549

For $13 bucks I went this option....http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006U ... detailpage

On at 35 degrees, Off at 45 degrees

I may add a timer at some point because I feel like saving energy once in awhile :-)

Yes I have the Etecnos. Coldest start was 6°F. And after 10 seconds of glow plugs it cranked really slow for about 10 seconds. Once it caught it sounded like an old Detroit 6-71 for the first few seconds. I think I'm due for a new battery.

Owners manual says to plug in below 5°F. I plug mine in when I get home from work while the engine is still warm and leave it plugged in all night and unplug before work in the morning. That's typically how a block heater is used and that's also how our fleet of trucks at work are plugged in all night at the end of the day.

Whenever I plug it in from cold it take all night to warm it up to the block heater temp of about 93°F and my electric meter spins like crazy.

I keep it plugged in below 10°F
