Post subject:  Ignition switch

I have the ignition switch problem and have read here about replacing the switch and rod. My problem is with removing the lock shield? Are theses only fitted to the export KJ or are the fitted to the US version? and if so how to remove the 4 shear security bolts to remove the lock? I have tried drilling 1 out but access is tight. Any advice grateful.

Been awhile since I've looked at mine so I don't remember the lock shield.

Picked up some T-handled (actually more of an L-handle) torx wrenches from a pawn shop with a dimpled short end that fit the security bolts. Handle part is orange plastic and Ames might be the brand.

See the Dorman how to video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5m31g0 ... plpp_video . As I recall it's not on a CRD but the process and part are the same.

Thanks for the replies and the link to the video. I see that there is no shield fitted to that KJ I guess they fit them to UK spec cars and maybe others. Its a large metal clamp that encases the complete unit and there is no access to the release button and even if so the lock barrel can not be removed with out removing the security clamp first. I managed to drill out the security bolts and removed the clamp allowing access to the lock barrel and actuator rod. The clamp has no other use but to prevent removing the lock barrel so it could be disposed of or refit with new bolts (Allen keys bolts for easier removal next time) o and yes the rod was broken on the end where it enters the switch. Must be a common problem, purchased a replacement on the web.

Stumbled up on this good video of Jeep Liberty won't start and the full diagnosis process to find the problem.
Then walks you through how to replace the bad ignition switch actuator mechanism which had broke off preventing it from starting.
It's a gasser, but the process and basics are the same for the diesel.

Thought it would be a good share, enjoy.

One broke on my sons jeep so 1 of 4 at the time was frustrating at first.

Thanks WW

Guess we should add this to our already long list of preventive maintenance replacement items to be proactive? :banghead: :juggle:

about to tackle this task in the next day or so. couple of notes.
if your truck will not start, go under the hood, to the fuse box. remove the starter relay. take a jumper wire and place into 2 of the spade connection holes, turn the key and the truck will start and run. could get you home if you are stranded. don't keep doing this but it will save a tow bill
you will need a TORX #10 SECURITY bit or screwdriver. very important it has to be SECURITY, not a standard torx. they have a hollow center and will allow you to take the #10 screw out in order to replace the switch.

hope it helps

Agree,
Please Note: Be real sure when you remove the starter relay and jumper the two spade connectors in the distribution panel that you only jumper terminal No. 30 to No. 87 (9 & 10) to engage the starter. The ignition switch will have to be in the "Run" or "On" position to allow the engine to start. Jumpering the wrong terminals could do some serious damage.

...and then get out and remove the jumper or your starter will just keep spinning....

Best to put Jeep in Park or Neutral....so you do not run over anybody... and turn the key all the way so as to have the ignition ON and the steering wheel unlocked and SKEES enabled.

Then briefly jumper pins 30 and 87 together inside the empty Starter Relay socket.
Engine should turn over and fire if Fuse #8 40 Amps is OK.

This procedure overrides the ignition switch, actuator pin assembly, Park and Neutral sensors.

Early KJs...such as my 2002 Export CRD...do not need the Security Torx bit to remove the ignition switch from the steering column....some early Jeeps were probably being liberated without the proper key but it beats me how the SKEES system can be over-ridden! If I could work it out I would of course not post my findings anywhere!

The ignition switch itself can be rotated with a small flat screwdriver so as to be able to drive around until a broken actuator pin assembly can be picked up but of course the chipped key needs to be in place and steering lock released
