Hello everyone. First post, been lurking in the shadows and reading the many informative threads that are out there.
I just looked at an 06 crd with 79k miles on it. Interior, exterior all look great. only problem is that according to the dealer it needs a new engine. Unfortunately, all the guy was able to tell was that they brought it to some where for some service work when they got it in and some shavings got in the motor. Hey couldn't tell me what they were attempting to work on when it happened. It seemed like he knew nothing about engines. I am not afraid to yank the motor out and apart to explore and repair. Just wondering if you fellas think its worth the gamble and what kind of offer should I throw at them. I was thinking a max of $2000 as its been sitting on there lot like this for 14 months.
Thanks in advance Josh
Give him an absolute rock bottom price on this vehicle because repairs are going to be expensive, even if you are performing the labor. Tell them if they do not know what is wrong or how to repair it, they are correct that really needs a new engine and quote them the price of a new crate engine from Chrysler. The idea here is to tell them how much it is going to be to repair a 10 year old vehicle, and that it is practically worthless at this point. If they do not like your price, leave it with them as an offer and walk away; there is a good chance they will relent and practically give it to you. If they indeed had it on the lot for 14 months they are likely eager to get rid of it.
I would also get this CRD on a hoist to see if there are any other problems with it, (driveline, suspension or steering issues).
If you do purchase this vehicle, start your repairs by reading over Sam's CRD Noob Guide. When you finish rebuilding your engine and upgrading the transmission with a better torque converter and a kit, upgrade your CRD engine with the following...
1) An engine and transmission tune from Green Diesel Engineering, (if your turbo is pooched, he has a great upgrade replacement that boosts engine output to 200HP and 400 Ft-Lbs of torque!).
2) An engine thermostat assembly upgrade; the O.E. thermostats are horrible, and do not get the engine up to proper operating temperature.
3) Do something about the crankcase ventilation system; either an elephant hose modification or the Provent 200 solutions, (the Provent is more environmentally friendly).
4) Install a lift pump in the fuel tank; this amazingly was not done on the CRD, even though it was done on the gasser. A lift pump will help provide necessary fuel pressure to your filter head under the hood.
5) Sasquatch Motorsports Intake Elbow Kit, (stage 1 and maybe stage 2). This physically disconnects the EGR and removes the failure prone flow control valve.
Best regards,
