Hello everyone. First post, been lurking in the shadows and reading the many informative threads that are out there. I just looked at an 06 crd with 79k miles on it. Interior, exterior all look great. only problem is that according to the dealer it needs a new engine. Unfortunately, all the guy was able to tell was that they brought it to some where for some service work when they got it in and some shavings got in the motor. Hey couldn't tell me what they were attempting to work on when it happened. It seemed like he knew nothing about engines. I am not afraid to yank the motor out and apart to explore and repair. Just wondering if you fellas think its worth the gamble and what kind of offer should I throw at them. I was thinking a max of $2000 as its been sitting on there lot like this for 14 months. Thanks in advance Josh |

There is not enough info here to really be able to tell you much. I would press for some more info from the dealer/shop to find out what really happened. I don't know how "shavings" could get in the motor unless they were tearing it apart to do something like a head gasket repair, or at least something requiring the intake to be removed. If that is the case, find out what the original problem was. As is the trend, my bet would be that they either found a head gasket problem or a rocker/valve problem and decided to fix it themselves, not knowing what they were doing, and destroyed the rockers or valves by not timing it correctly. I could be WAY wrong there, but there is a trend in that department. Even with a bad motor, I doubt you'll get them down to $2000 for it. Is it a sport or limited? The rolling chassis is worth more than $2000 to them and a new motor can be had for ~$4000. That being said, they do NOT want to do the labor on that themselves so they would much rather sell it to a DIY'er. My guess is they won't end up going much lower than $4000 if everything is in good condition, especially if it is a limited. Maybe a little lower if it has other problems and/or is a sport. You can't really use the timing belt age/condition as leverage in this case since they're calling it junk anyway. That being said, there have been a few posts here lately looking to sell used engines for reasonable prices if you're inclined to do the work. If you can get it for a reasonable price considering your own "labor", then you might be able to get it up and running for $6k - $8k which is not bad for a vehicle with under 80k miles. Demand more info from them first and see if they'll play ball. If they refuse to tell you any more, it might be best to avoid dealing with them in the first place. |

Thanks in advance Josh Give him an absolute rock bottom price on this vehicle because repairs are going to be expensive, even if you are performing the labor. Tell them if they do not know what is wrong or how to repair it, they are correct that really needs a new engine and quote them the price of a new crate engine from Chrysler. The idea here is to tell them how much it is going to be to repair a 10 year old vehicle, and that it is practically worthless at this point. If they do not like your price, leave it with them as an offer and walk away; there is a good chance they will relent and practically give it to you. If they indeed had it on the lot for 14 months they are likely eager to get rid of it. I would also get this CRD on a hoist to see if there are any other problems with it, (driveline, suspension or steering issues). If you do purchase this vehicle, start your repairs by reading over Sam's CRD Noob Guide. When you finish rebuilding your engine and upgrading the transmission with a better torque converter and a kit, upgrade your CRD engine with the following... 1) An engine and transmission tune from Green Diesel Engineering, (if your turbo is pooched, he has a great upgrade replacement that boosts engine output to 200HP and 400 Ft-Lbs of torque!). 2) An engine thermostat assembly upgrade; the O.E. thermostats are horrible, and do not get the engine up to proper operating temperature. 3) Do something about the crankcase ventilation system; either an elephant hose modification or the Provent 200 solutions, (the Provent is more environmentally friendly). 4) Install a lift pump in the fuel tank; this amazingly was not done on the CRD, even though it was done on the gasser. A lift pump will help provide necessary fuel pressure to your filter head under the hood. 5) Sasquatch Motorsports Intake Elbow Kit, (stage 1 and maybe stage 2). This physically disconnects the EGR and removes the failure prone flow control valve. Best regards, |

I got mine for 1500.00 and the dealer said it needed a new engine........out of time and it had broken rockers but the dealers know so little about these engines that they just condemned it to death and hosed the previous owner. As mentioned, review the Noob guide and make the call after you educate yourself. |

Metal shavings in the engine could be from a blown turbo. Sometimes a blown turbo is just a blown turbo. But sometimes a blown turbo also means a blown engine. |

The sales department is only going to know what the technicians has told them. Most technicians know nothing about this engine. If it has really set there 14 months, the service department has probably scared the hell out of them with a quote on a engine replacement ( new or used). The previous owner I am sure got screwed. The sales department is now just trying to get something out of it. Granted as much as he can. Low ball them. if they don't like it, give them your number and tell them to call when they are ready. |

AGREED!! LOW BALL THEM. YOU CAN LEGITIMATELY CLAIM THAT IT IS GOING TO BE EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR. |

I read the noob guide before I went and looked at it. The turbo appears good on the intake side at least. Bearings spin nice and don't have any play. I called the salesman(GM Dealer) up yesterday and he says that it was running and driving when they took it in on trade. They brought it to the nearby chrysler dealer to have some work done. Glow plugs and water pump he says. I'm wondering if they f'ed up the timing when they did the water pump. Sure sounds like the likely scenario at this point. I going to take a ride over to that chrysler dealer on friday with the VIN and see if they will tell any more info. If not I'll go talk to the dealer that I bought my Dart from. Have them look in the system. Thanks for all your input and knowledge Oh yeah, it is a Sport btw |

Good chance it's just rockers then, but it's a big gamble, ranging from $1-5k in parts, plus all of the standard upgrades for another $1-3k. I would see if you can rock the crank back and forth gently (I think it's a 21mm socket). There's a good chance it will hit something solid after 20 degrees or so, but is it smooth in route, or is it seized? I wouldn't pay more than $1k if it's seized, or maybe walk away with a lot of time to put into a better rig. |

Little update. Was planning on calling and making an offer on friday, but then a crd limited popped up on craigslist for $4500. Just before i called the owned of the limited the salesman called me about the broken one. He told me they decided to put a used engine in and they want 11000 for it after they were done. I decided to forget about that one and persue the limited. |

Good luck with any dealership claiming that line of bull... They will wholesale it out on the next auction run. They are already into it for the trade value, I can't see them paying retail rate for an engine they know nothing about, and then trying to sell it stock for 50% over KBB. Never happen. They also will have to disclose the replacement engine as a USED engine if they do that, and that will further kill the value. That body will probably be at a boneyard in 60 days. |

Asking 47, they were probably into it for about 2500-3000 originally. I can't see them accepting a $1000 offer for the rolling body as-is, they will try to roll the dice on the auction and hope they can get a gambler to take it. At least you aren't the one stuck holding the bag. Smile about that. |
