Post subject:  AC Air Compressor

Hello, I am new on the broad, and this is my first post.

I have 2006 grand jeep Cherokee CRD limited. I had this car for one year and like it. I only drive this car no more than 2 months out of a year. I live in the US and this car is in Dominican Republic. i am a snow bird.

While I am in DR, the diesel quality in DR is so bad, I need to add one bottle conditioner in each fill up. I still have cold start problem. I have try to start the car 3 to 5 time in the morning in order for the car to start, and a lot of white smoke coming out of the tail pipe. The mechanic tells me that, the car sit in the garage all that time is not good, but I have no choice.

This morning I started the car and I saw smoke coming out in the front. I stop the car and open the hook t check, only to found out the smoke is coming from the fan. I took the car down to the mechanic with the AC off, and it drove normal. Now the mechanic told me I need to replace the air compressor, and in DR it is very difficult the locate one and it will cost me around USD$500.00 for the part. And there is no warranty.

Can someone offer any suggestions? I don't need to use the car right now, and I can go back to the US and try to buy the right part and bring it back to the mechanic. He also told me that, he needs to remove the bad air compressor than show it to use part dealer in order to get the right part. Is this necessary?? I am putting the repair on hold at the moment. Any help will be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Herman

If you remove the AC Relay from the relay box under the hood the AC compressor clutch will stop engaging...see if that fixes your problem for the time being! :?

Bear in mind that the LHD 2006 CRD has a known problem with the fact that the Fuel Filter Head Mounting Bracket jams the wire harness going behind it to the chassis. You need to remove this bracket and check for any damage to this harness and any wires chafing to chassis..this can cause all sorts of problems!

Thank you for the info BillWill.

Just came back talking with the mechanic, and he told me that a new compressor from Germany will cost me around US$800.00 and will take 3 weeks to get into this country. That is before all the tax and shipping. Plus his labor, this is a going to be a one thousand dollars fix!!

I am taking off at the end of the month, so there is not enough time to wait for the part and get it fixed before I go back to the US. So I told him to hold off doing anything.

He also told me that I can't get parts for this car in the US, only Europe country carries it. Because it is a German made engine. If this is fact, I am going to have a hard time to find any use part in the US.

I am just going to drive the car without the AC for now.

Any help will be appreciated.

You said your vehicle is a 2006 GRAND Cherokee.
Does that mean it has the 3.0L V6 Mercedes diesel?
Here in the states, only the 07 and 08 Grand Cherokees were available with the 3.0L diesel.
If yours is the same as the 07/08 then you can try looking up parts for the 07/08 diesel.
www.rockauto.com is a good source.

In any case, they were all assembled in Detroit, so parts are available.

Regarding hard starts, add some diesel stabil or an additive that prevents forming of algae. Image

I've been using those on diesel that's over 5 years old without issues.
