I recently purchased a 2006 Liberty CRD with 159000 miles on it. It runs well except for today it would die while driving. The engine was warm and we were cruising along at 60 when the tach dropped to zero and the engine was off. After waiting about 5 minutes it started and ran for about 2 minutes. After a few rounds of this we managed to make it back home but am now hesitant to take it very far.

So after reviewing various posts I have a few ideas but wondering what the opinions of the experts are?

My ideas are either fuel related or crank position sensor.

I do not know much about the history of this vehicle and have not done much to it yet.

Thanks in advance

Yep sounds like crank position sensor.

I had the same problem on my 2002 Export 2.5 CRD...would drive along and the engine would cut out and grind to a halt.
Restart it and it would go for a while then cut out again. No codes posted but I suspected the fuel filter.
This was on a long trip and the problem got worse...when I got to my destination I had a Mechanic friend replace the fuel filter with a new Mopar one I had with me...fixed the problem!

So check you are not getting air into the system or have a clogged filter or bad fuel.

Try swapping over the ASD relay with an identical one next to it.

The 2006 LHD CRDs have a known problem of the Fuel Filter Head Mounting Bracket jamming down on the harness behind it causing shorts to chassis or to other wires.....remove this bracket and check for wire damage in this area.

The 06 model year has traction control, 05 does not, it required the fuel filter assembly to be raised to clear the abs pump.
That involved a different bracket. There's a bundle of wires behind the bracket that don't line up with the provided part of the bracket that has a raised lip for the wires.
That causes the bundle of wires to rub on the metal bracket wearing through the insulation. Check there first.
