This is a message that is going out to all Liberty and Jeep CRD owners in other markets around the world.

It has come to my attention that the new generation V.M. Motori A428 engine also has O.E. thermostat assembly issues.

This engine is currently optional in Jeep Wranglers in Europe, and a version of which is also in the Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon, (2.8L Duramax Diesel). I have been asked by a Jeep Dealer in Germany to develop a replacement thermostat assembly for the bad O.E. design.

To do this I require O.E. thermostat cores. If anyone knows where I can get some, please let me know. If anyone has a used A428 O.E. thermostat assembly, I would be willing to pay for shipping to take it off your hands. I am especially interested in thermostat cores from the U.K. and German markets.

For the record, the A428, (Wrangler CRD; approximately 2010 to present time), is completely different from the R428, (Jeep Liberty CRD; 2005 - 2006).

The A428 takes a different thermostat assembly from the R428. I am only at the planning stage for an aftermarket thermostat assembly for the A428, and there are no guarantees that I will be successful with this new project like I was with the H.D.S. Model 001.

But thank you for your kind thoughts anyway! :D

Sorry to go off topic....have you had a chance to look at the new Colorado diesel? Curious if it has the same design

It is not off topic jws84_02... in fact, my best understanding of the 2.8L Duramax Diesel is that it is a V.M. Motori A428 engine with some minor differences. G.M. specified some different parts for the A428 to use in the Colorado and Canyon; this may include some changes to the the O.E. thermostat assembly.

I already have a brand new O.E. thermostat assembly for the Colorado/Canyon. I am not impressed. It is very small - smaller than the O.E. thermostat for the R425/R428 engine series - and therefore will not flow as much coolant. This is what the Germans are blaming for overheating engine issues on the Wrangler CRDs when the engine is being worked hard. The G.M. thermostat assembly also has a valve that opens up at 80 degrees Celsius, (176 degrees Fahrenheit). This tells me that it will not adequately heat the engine in cold weather conditions AS WELL AS being too small to adequately flow coolant in hot weather while towing or in high speed operation. A terrible design for this engine with an inappropriate thermostat valve installed.

I also read they put ceramic gp's in "to help with North American winters" :banghead:

But I guess they bet on them lasting past the warranty period and then it's not their problem

The Chevy Colorado and the GMC Canyon top out over $50,000.00 CDN up here... that is significantly more than I paid for my full sized Chevy Silverado 1500!!

I know this is pie-in-the-sky ideology, but they should be making EVERY effort to keep their customers happy!! :x
