Hey guys

Just wondering if it is possible to remove or bypass the clutch in safety switch? I have the manual 2.5crd so have to press clutch to start. Is there a way? Thank you

Carl

In theory it might be possible but what other vehicle operations doing so might get messed up by the electronics "thinking" the clutch is always disengaged I have no clue. The only circumstance I can think of where this might be desirable is in the event of an engine failure where you might want to "drive" the vehicle a short distance using the starter as an "engine" which is not advisable and will likely kill the starter. I note though that in 4-wheel low the clutch interlock is disengaged for certain off the road applications per the 03 FSM located at http://colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/KJ/

If you look at the clutch pedal you will see the switch mounted above it. I would guess its a closed circuit with the pedal depressed so removing the switch and connecting the 2 wires together should achieve your goal. I don't think it will upset the BCM or ECM as sitting with the clutch depressed has no issues.

Ahhhh didn't think of it like that... I will have a look. See if bypassing it works. Will let ya know what happens when I get some time to do it. . (Working nights till next weekend)

Why do you want to disable it? It is a safety feature.

If you have the Owner's Handbook...look carefully in the glove box....you will see that you can start the engine without depressing the clutch if you are in 4X4 Low range....useful for when you are off-roading and stall on an incline! I have not actually tried this though

My Nissan Hardbody had a clutch "interlock" switch. It was a momentary switch you could hit when you needed or wanted to start the truck without pressing the clutch in. It was there so you could start the truck in gear when on a steep incline.

For a funny story, I have a jeep CJ5 with a fuel injected 5.0 Ford engine in it. It doesn't have a clutch safety switch. On an offroading trip once, I lost the alternator and had to switch it out in a parking lot. After I was done I reached inside to key start the jeep, and realized it was in gear when it lurched forward. Unfortunately the engine started, and because it's fuel injected, the computer revs the engine for a few seconds when it first starts. The Jeep took off with me running next to it (more like being dragged by it) hanging into the steering wheel. I was able to jump in the door and get it into neutral an get it stopped, but before I did, the jeep had run over my buddies tool box, and sent about 150 sockets all over the place.

Most agricultural machinery has a clutch interlock but Jeep are the only car I have owned that have this. I guess its a bit like the key in ignition chime. I know the key is in the ignition because I left it there :banghead: But yes if you cranked over this diesel in gear I am sure it would drive off pretty rapidly.
