Post subject:  Looking at a possible purchase on a CRD tomorrow high miles?

Hi all! I have actually never owned a Jeep (yet!) and plan to go check out a 2005 Liberty CRD tomorrow. I'm curious as to what I should look for and what is high miles for a CRD?

Here's the info from the ad:

Diesel jeep liberty, runs & drives like new. Perfect vehicle for hunters/fishers for that drive to your camp, gets 21 mpg 30mpg highway. Owned and maintained by jeep tech. Leather, sunroof, premium sound, heated seats, remote start, bluetooth Uconnect, roof rack . Full factory skid plates. Posi rear axle. front & rear trailer hitches. Is rated to tow up to 5000lbs. New Inspection, new tires, new brakes front & rear. Timing belt ,idler pulleys, water pump replaced,
ice cold AC.

The seller also told me he had replaced the torque converter.
It has 250,000 miles and he's asking $4000

Anyway I'm looking for a new daily driver to replace my Ford Escape 4x4 (which I like but due to rust the subframe rotted and broke). But anyway I was wondering is 250k miles high for these? I have a diesel truck(7.3 powerstroke) that has well over 200,000 miles and still runs great and the few years I have owned it have had no issues at all.

Opinions? Thanks!

It sounds like it has every option! 250,000 is a lot more than you typically see around here. I dont know of too many people that have hit 200k.

There are a lot of things that could be wrong with it. Timing belt is a big thing. It should have been done at least twice now. Check the hoses going from the air box too the turbo, from turbo to CAC(intercooler), and CAC to engine for soggyness due to oil contamination. There are silicone replacements from mishimoto and a few other companies that replace the factory stock ones and eliminate this issue. Air in fuel issues so maybe ask if he replaced the fuel filter head or installed a lift pump.

GDE tune would be a perk.

put 4000$ in your saving account or down payment toward new diesel vehicle.

I would grab it if it was a good vehicle, of course I have been around CRDs and know what to look for.

Do you know how to turn wrenches and work on vehicles?

Did you drive it or hear it run yet?

Tell the seller you want to look at it, with a cold engine, and dont tell him this, but before you even start it, squeeze the upper radiator hose to see if there is on pressure on it, of so, pull the rad cap and see if it is pressurized on a cold engine. If it has any pressure, you may need a head gasket and possibly a new head.

Appears to be this one https://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/cto/5588251197.html if anyone is in the vicinity and can help view it.

The trailer hitch attachment in the front is cause for concern for me. Tells me it may have been used as a plow truck.

That aside, the owner is proud as f**k to have a diesel CRD, judging from the stickers and wheel cover. It is possibly well-maintained.

If you aren't afraid of dirt, grit and tools, it'll maybe a decent daily vehicle. Yes, 250K miles is among the highest mileage on one of these that I've seen, but the engine is, IIRC, rated for 350K miles. So, for dirt cheap, you could get into a diesel vehicle that'd give you 4-5 years of service.

Looks similar to my seat covers, which are cheap Autozone ones.

The Jeep in the ad linked above belongs to a longtime member of this forum (moto-scoot). He is a jeep tech at a local dealer and has taken good care of this CRD. I think his wife is a rural mail carrier and drove it on a mail route for a while. I forget the details, but he is an honest guy and I'm sure that he would answer any questions about it.

Thank you all for the responses! I took a look at it and drove it. Seemed to run strong and shift smoothly. The body and interior was a little rough but seemed to be in good shape mechanically. The seller seemed quite knowledgeable and seemed to have took good care of it mechanically. I do own a diesel truck and have seen other trucks and VW TDI's with well over 400k miles but honestly never heard of a CRD until recently and wasn't sure how well these engines hold up compared to others with the higher miles. I'm basically looking for a cheaper work vehicle and thought this seemed like it would be good for that. So not looking to spend a lot on anything fancy anyway. I enjoy turning wrenches and doing my own work as far as general repairs but just don't want to get into something that will need a engine rebuild soon either. The only downside to this vehicle other then the high miles was the fact the seller already had it running and warmed up before I got there and the fact my buddy from work who has one(why I'm so interested now haha) told me that if it has a factory torque converter to expect to be pulling the trans before too long.

Factory TC will last unless it's tuned, or has the original programming from the factory, which is rare. Either way, if you don't let it shudder like crazy (you can drive around it for a good while), it won't hurt anything. But, you do want a GDE tune, and all you have to do is swap the TC for about $300 in parts, and the transmission should be fine. Also adding an updated pump to transmission is good insurance, I think they are about $400, but I am surprised when I open them sometimes and find that the pump is already updated. You sure he has the stock TC in there?

Mountain, I believe he said it does have an ECO tune.

One doesn't *have* to change the TC with the ECO. I had mine stock with my ECO tune. I rarely had issues. Then again, mine had 171K miles and this one 250K. YMMV
