Took the plung and bought a new '06 Dark Kaki Limited (One of 7 CRD's on the lot). The dealer offers free oil changes and inspections for life. The oil change interval can be no less than 3k and 3 mo. Is there any benefit from waiting or should I go for as often as possible?

Congratulations on the CRD, you need to spend some time in your owners manual. Recommended change intervals are between 6,250 and 12,500 miles. Oil standards are a debatable with this Jeep. You really want a CI-4 or CI-4+ rated 5W40 Synthetic oil formulated for a diesel engine. The factory recommended 0W40 Synthetic has an outdated API rating and doesn't measure up to the CI-4 standard.

But hey, if they will change the stuff for free every 3000 miles and actually use synthetic (which is @ $7/qt at the dealer) then go for it. I just wouldn't stretch the mileage on 0W40. Watch your oil levels, most of that 0W40 will get sucked in you intercooler.

You can't beat free.
But if you opt to do them yourself, run Amsoil European 5W40. You Can extend the drain interval using it.
AMSOIL European Car Formula Synthetic 5W-40 Motor Oil (AFL) is specially formulated for the lubrication needs of modern European gasoline and diesel cars and light trucks. Formulated with advanced AMSOIL synthetic base stocks, premium additives and a 5W-40 viscosity rating, AMSOIL AFL is the preferred oil for virtually all European automobiles, especially turbo charged models. It is the only oil in North America to be recommended for the latest specifications of all three major European automakers - Volkswagen (Audi), BMW and Mercedes-Benz and the latest North American API specifications. AMSOIL AFL is highly versatile for multiple applications.

AMSOIL, the leader in automotive synthetic lubrication, produced the world's first API qualified synthetic motor oil in 1972. Trust the extensive experience of AMSOIL "The First in Synthetics®" to do the best job protecting your engine.

Let me know if you need any more info or would like a quote. I can get you a better deal than retail for sure.

Correct fill is 6 qts and 12.8 oz's (I just do 12 oz) and it may show when checked about 1/8 inch below the full mark on the dipstick as mine does. I you put the extra oil in to bring it up to full mark as I did in our CRD the engine will sucke the extra oil out in about 1000 miles with most apparently going through the CCV into intercooler system.

The problem with the "free" oil changes is that the dealership will not use the right oil in them.

You need oil that is "CI-4 PLUS" rated for the CRD. The minimum spec in the manual is not, and is the wrong oil for that engine, however it is what the dealer will use for the free oil changes....

Which brand of oil, I don't care - as long as it is API Service Category CI-4 PLUS.

Here, I will recycle an old post of mine - just so I don't have tp retype it.. :)

-

The manual specs a minimum of CF rated oil. However, you want a CI-4 PLUS rated oil.

Here's why:

The API Service Ratings
info here:http://api-ep.api.org/filelibrary/API_MotorOilGuide_2004.pdf
info here: http://api-ec.api.org/printerformat.cfm?ContentID=99EAFC66-2882-41BB-84BCFB52B25D4CA3

specifically say:

API CI-4 oils are superior in performance to those meeting API CH-4, CG-4 and CF-4 and may be used in engines calling for those API Service Categories.

That clearly states that CI-4 rated oil meets and exceeds the specs for CF oil.

Now, the CRD is a HIGH PRESSURE turbocharged DIRECT INJECTION diesel engine with an EGR system.

The CF rating is for:
off-road, indirect- injected and other diesel engines including
those using fuel with over 0.5% weight sulfur.

The CRD is direct injected, and does not use high sulfur diesel.

The CI rating is:
    For high-speed, four-stroke
engines designed to meet 2004 exhaust
emission standards implemented in 2002. CI-4
oils are formulated to sustain engine durability
where exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is used
and are intended for use with diesel fuels
ranging in sulfur content up to 0.5% weight.

Additionally the service rating for CI states:

Can be used in place of CD, CE, CF-4, CG-4,
and CH-4 oils. Some CI-4 oils may also qualify
    for the CI-4 PLUS designation.

The CI-4 PLUS designation is "extra" to the CI-4 rating:
    the “CI-4 PLUS” designation identi-
fies oils formulated to provide a higher level of protection against soot-related
viscosity increase and viscosity loss due to shear in diesel engines.category to maintain performance.

Shell Rotella T Synthetic, Mobil 1 Truck & SUV (or whatever it is called now), and Mobil Delvac 1 all are CI-4 PLUS rated, and not only may be used in place of the required CH rating as stated in the manual, they exceed the performance of the CH rated oils - and are specifically designed for the type of motor that the CRD is.

Well said V.

My next change will likely be to Rotella T synthetic 5w-40 due to availability and price, I hate to do that because I have used Mobil 1 in every vehicle I have owned in the last 29 years. But I haven't seen The Mobil 1 5w-40 now in about 3 or 4 months.

Was through Wally world last night, didn't see any Mobil 1 5W-40 either. They had 5qt jugs of the new Truck & SUV gasser formula but no Turbo Diesel formula, not even an empty place on the shelf. Had one lonely gallon of Rotella 5W-40. Previous time I was there, clerk was stocking 2 cases of Rotella 5W-40. I grabbed 2 gal, came back 30 min later and they were all gone.

I appriciate all the responses. I found the Rotella at the Wally World (almost 30 gallons on the shelf). I will be changing to this as soon as my Fumoto and skid plates come in. I am also installing a Provent until OldNavys is ready.

Man that's a lot of money to that with a ProVent, I would just do a plug on the hose to intake and put a hose from CCV to under truck untill our unit is ready or just do the Provent and be done with the oil problem. I do like the faith some are showing for my idea I sold to a company to make for our CRD's, but I just have trouble with people spending all those extra dollars, maybe I have just got a little more consertive were money is concerned as I have got older.
