Is it worth paying for the better transmission oil, what do you recommend?

The 545 transmission is recommended to ONLY use ATF+4, and people have reported problems using anything else. The KJ also uses ATF+4 in the transfer case and the power steering system. If you want to take the chance and use something else, thats up to you - its your vehicle and your money for any repairs.

I've only ever used ATF+4 in any of my Chrysler products, and it isn't that expensive. Just get one that says fully synthetic, so you aren't getting a blend or standard mineral oil, and you should be good to go.

Be aware, the transmission dipstick is too long and hits the bottom of the pan, so when the stick says "full" you are actually LOW. You may need to add at least 2 more quarts to get the performance where it feels smooth.

Anytime there is a question about transmission performance on these, start by adding a quart of ATF+4 and drive again. If the problem remains, add a second quart. If the problem still remains, THEN look for other outside indicators. The transmission is huge and can easily handle a couple extra quarts of juice, most of them aren't filled up enough.

While I don't recommend mixing fluids the transfer case is not particular about its ATF. Older models were spec'ed out to use dex merc III.

I think Op asked if it is worth paying more $$$ for various brands of atf+4. I got the Napa bottled atf+4, which is a tad cheaper than valvoline bottled atf+4. As long as it is atf+4, it's your choice what brand you prefer, but as long as it meets atf+4 standards, you're good to go.

^^^officially licensed ATF+4 brands^^^

Only use ones from the above list.

As for PS system any ATF or PS fluid will work, just don't mix PS fluid and ATF unless in a emergency.

For the T-case,again, any ATF will work and you can mix them. You can also use any 5w-20 engine oil(same viscosity as ATF) but don't mix ATF and engine oil.

I've been running walmarts supertech in mine. It's the cheapest ATF+4 I could find.

I think it comes down to personnel preference. If you need more piece of mind, buy a name brand atf. If not, get a cheaper one

I think that if its to ATF+4 spec, then you should be ok with whatever. The branded MAY have some added benefits(no idea what), but as long as what you buy is ATF+4 there shouldn't be an issue.

My original reply was based on the fact that over here (England) there isn't the choice of manufacturers you seem to have in the US. I have the choice of Mopar from a dealer or Comma from Amazon, and thats it! I didn't realise quite what a choice you have.
