Starter will not engage; no solenoid click and no signs of starter engagement.
This morning we drove the 'Libby' into town (Salida CO) and ran several errands and starter was flawless.

I've checked battery voltage (12.8 volts) and cleaned cables. Headlights are nice and bright and all dash lights work and the ignition switch seems to work. I checked the circuit breaker and relays inside the black box on the drivers side.

On which side of the engine is the starter located?

Thanks in advance for the help and ideas. We are camped at Heart of the Rockies Campground thru Sunday.

Sounds like a crank position sensor problem. Replace it..... Do a search on here for the part number ..... Source it and have it installed or you install it.

Sounds like a bad ignition switch or bad starter.
Starter is in the drivers side.
You can try bypassing the starter relay to see it it will crank.

You can make a jumper wire, remove the starter relay and put it into the wire terminals to force the starter to crank. With the key on and the starter manually being forced to crank it should start. If it does not then you are likely having another issue.

The ECU controls the starter, not the key. When you turn the key to start it the ECU reads this and then decides if it will allow the starter to turn. If you have having sentry/security key issues then the ECU will not allow a start. It will also not start even if you bypass the starter relay and force the engine to turn over.

Try making a jumper and touching it across the connections where the starter relay would go. I don't remember which pins it is but there is a diagram on the relay that if you can decode will tell you what two you need to jump across.

Do you have any other issues? Odd lights on the dash? Is the small red LED lit on the lower left of the cluster? Do you have a code reader with you?

I had a similiar, but maybe totally different issue that lead to no start, check fuse 14 in the cabin fuse box and see if its blown - if it is the ECU and TCM get no power and the vehicle will not start, however if this fuse is blown you will have extra lights on the cluster than normal.

SOLVED the problem on our 2005 2.8L CRD Libby. Now the starter engages and the engine spins and starts almost instantly.

Using the search function on LOSTJEEPS.COM I found a few instances where the IGNITION ACTUATOR had broken (cheap pot metal) and the Ignition Starter Switch was NOT being engaged because of the broken Actuator.

The problem was fixed by replacing two (2) parts which were in stock at AUTOZONE here in Salida, CO.

Replaced Ignition Actuator; #295435 924-704 DORMAN $40.99

Replaced Ignition Starter Switch; #293143 LS1027 $16.99

My next door neighbor at the campground, Joel, was nice enough to drive me to Autozone and the above parts were on the counter when we arrived at the store. Great service by Rhonda at the Autozone parts counter.

Thanks for the kindness of LOST members who replied to our call for help...we no longer feel stranded and can continue our trip to Gunnison CO next week.

Those things break so often I've resorted to carrying 3 spares in the Jeep. Not cheap either up here, over $130 cdn each.
