According to FactoryChryslerParts.com, 56044776BB is the current and correct part number for the Engine Control Module for a 2006 Jeep Liberty 2.8 CRD with automatic transmission!
http://www.factorychryslerparts.com/products/MODULE-Engine-Controller/10671582/56044776BB.html

All of these numbers are older versions or superseded numbers:
56044776AB; 56044776AC; 56044776AF; 56044776BA; 56044776AA; 56044776AD

now the big question, can I take that to mean that the older ones will also work? our original computer was fried years ago by a dealership as they did our timing belt (long story and no, we don't go them anymore) and I guess it makes sense that we would get the latest and greatest from them as the replacement.

The older numbers will probably work, but if I was buying a replacement, I would want the latest up to date number. The newer number probably has some internal improvements or bugs fixed over the older numbers???

certainly will try for one of those first :) , but there are only 2 on car-part (one is close to the Jeep! but they don't list a price and I can't call them 'til monday) while there are many, many of the other ones. I cannot afford hundreds of dollars for a new one so used has to work.

What is wrong with your current one or what happened to it? Just curious!!! :?
They generally do not go bad and / or can be reprogrammed!

monday I'll find out for sure (I hope). It's at a dealership and they are closed today. I'm pretty sure I sent 12 volts back down to the computer by trying to bypass the highspeed relay to test the fan. diagnosing a problem at a freeway rest area in 96* heat on blacktop that smells like pee was apparently a bad idea and I was sloppy in my actions. :(

First thing Monday, give Green Diesel Engineering a call and explain to Keith what you have done and seek any advice he may offer... He may be able to repair your OBC or replace it at lower cost than going OEM at a stealership. They (GDE) probably know more about the internals of the Jeep CRD OBC than anyone else around and have the tools to work on them. They also may be able to supply you with a replacement if yours is not repairable. A new computer requires matching with VIN number and SKIM code to match key transponder, otherwise it will not crank or start engine..
It could simply be a blown internal fuse inside the computer that needs to be replaced. Some OBC's have internal fuses in them for protection, not sure about the Jeep CRD OBC, but I have opened up some 90's Jeep Cherokee gassers computers and did some internal repairs to them with success... GDE would know if the Jeep OBC has any internal fuses!

Best of luck! and keep us posted as to progress or outcome!

Good advice from WWDiesel^^^

You sure that fuses 6, 15, 24 and 26 in the PDC under the hood are all OK?

Swap over the ASD relay with an identical near it....this relay supplies the power to these fan fuses and you may have blown the ASD relay contacts before a fuse blew.

If you replace the ECM, new or used, you will need to program the VIN, the SKIM Code, the Injectors individual numbers etc. :?

I would suspect that the 5604 4776 bb is probably a refurbished replacement unit and even if you bought a "new" one from the dealer you're likely getting a refurbished unit. This would also explain why it's a lot more difficult to find this refurbished unit in the used market versus the factory originals. There are just not that many of them out there.

I'd just go with the newest version you can find.

just got a call from the dealership and it was a bad asd fuse. the very same one I checked twice. guy says it looks like corrosion in the fuse panel so I'll get to clean that out later. but I don't care at the moment. :D just gotta figure out the best way to get the jeep and trailer back together and then continue our adventure southbound.
thanks everyone! :JEEPIN:

So very glad it was something simple and not something expensive!!!!
Please note: You cannot always look at a fuse and check it's integrity, the only sure way to test a fuse is with a high quality test light or an ohm meter....

Yeah....best to pull the fuse...measure with an Ohm meter and put fuse back...this helps to clean up any contact corrosion on the fuse pins!

worst part is that I did have a multimeter with me in one of the tool bags. :( vehicular repair should never be attempted in the blazing sun if at all possible. fries the brain.

YES! I have seen perfectly looking fues that for all intent looked good, but would not pass any voltage, none, nada!
I even had one brand new Buss fuse right out of box that looked perfect, but when installed would not pass any current.
A good DC voltage test light and a multi-meter is absolutely one of the best tools in the world when working any electrical issue!!!!

A really good DC voltage test light/circuit tester is made by SnapOn Tools; although a bit pricey, it does a wonderful job. It has a built in digital volt meter that reads in the color red for positive (+) circuits and reads in the color green for negative (-) circuits and is computer safe... I have one of these and it is hands down the best circuit testers I have ever owned or used!!!
There are some other brands available with the same functions if you shop around...

That is why I always keep a good hat in my Jeep when doing long trips....need to stop my bald head getting fried in the heat here while I am at the side of the road trying to fix a dead Jeep!
