Howdy, thanks for your response. We have had this 2006 CRD since 2008. Has 125000 miles oil changes at 5000mi with Shell Rotella Synthetic. Early this spring it started not starting after being off for 10minutes or more. Sometimes will start after 30 minutes of trying.

Will almost start then sound like the compression release is open, spins fast.

At dealer once for problem, acted nice for them. 150.00

At dealer now, it wont tell them what the problem is. I changed camshaft sensor, no help. HELP.

Replace the crankshaft sensor.

At that age if you have not replaced the crankshaft sensor it would be the first thing to try. They are notorious for going bad, causing hot start issues, unexpected engine shut-offs and never setting any DTC's (diagnostic trouble code or check engine light).
Also very important, at the age and mileage of your vehicle, if you have not had the timing belt replaced, it is way past due. The water pump should be replaced at the same time as the timing belt. If the belt breaks, it can cause all kinds of damage to the motor and get real expensive real fast... :grim:

Timing belt was replaced at 95000mi. Understood crank sensor would cause engine to shutdown. Have not had that problem. Been keeping engine running until final destination was reached and Jeep not needed for a day or so. Jeep runs fine except for not starting after being shut off for 10minutes or more.

Are you getting any DTC's when this happens? I would still replace the crank sensor, as they are notorious for being temperature sensitive.
Have you tried pumping the fuel pump on the fuel filter head to see if it makes any difference in the starting problem?
When this happens, either you are not getting fuel or, your ECM is not letting the injectors fire! If it starts after setting for a period and cools off a little it sounds like a temperature related issue and not a fuel issue. Most likely a sensor that is affected by temperature...

Replace the crankshaft sensor. It's good to do as preventative maintenance anyway, since when it fails you'll be stranded. Known issue due to proximity to hot turbo/manifold/ddownpipe.

If that doesn't do the trick, look into injectors. (Does it start when cold, but not when hot?)

Stopped by dealership. Mechanic talked to Chrysler about the codes it has stored. They say it needs a new ECM. Mechanic says no codes from Crankshaft Sensor, does not wanna just start replacing parts. Might just get it fixed and say gooooodby.

Codes shown apply to injector 1 and Injector 2 and some other stuff the mechanic was not sure what it was. Vehicle has codes specific to this engine. This dealership has allot of Dodge diesels it cares for. Has seen not many Jeep diesels. Apparently the Jeep CRD is a strange duck.

I'd tell that mechanic to replace the crank sensor first. It's a heck of a lot cheaper than a new ECM.

What are all these other codes he was talking about?

I would not trust a dealership to correctly tell me that the sun will rise in the East tomorrow.

If your engine runs at all, then NONE OF THE COMPUTERS ARE BAD. Period. It is general policy at every dealership to happily replace the most expensive (and non-returnable!) components FIRST because that makes the most profit for the dealerships. The computers on modern cars nearly always are NOT THE PROBLEM. Leave that money in your wallet, I just saved you over $1000.

The crank sensor MAY NOT cause the engine to shut down while running, that is an incorrect symptom. Not starting is however exactly how it presents itself and DOES NOT throw a code.

You need to listen to the advice you are getting here, everyone is telling you the correct answer. There are two sensors, you have only replaced one of them. The camshaft sensor CAN cause the engine to shut down, but the other sensor is the crankshaft sensor.

well i say next step to do is check fuel high pressure side. rail pressure , MPROP valve, injector return flow , that is easy to do. or only accurate test is BOSCH bench test , you may want to visit fuel injection diesel shop , for advice . when fuel delivery is a suspect (any diesel engine) my opinion this test must be performed, good luck

Not entirely true; when my crank sensor started going bad a couple years back, it shut motor down and put me on the side of the road on two different occasions and motor would not restart until I set there for about 10 minutes wondering what the heck was wrong. And it never gave ANY DTC's when this happened!
This only occurred during engine warm up right after a cold start and driving for about 2 miles....
Replaced crank sensor based on LOST info and never had the problem again!!!!

That is why I said it "may not" cause it. You were in closed loop operation, and possibly the computer is "learning" the song of the tone wheel at that point. After it is warmed up fully, the computer could continue with the cycle on its own, using only the camshaft pulses for reference.

This is all supposition b/c I'm not a programmer, but shutdowns have not been a consistent feature in the failure mode of the crank sensor. Failure to restart when hot is the giveaway.

Howdy. Thank You for all your input. Dealer changed Crankshaft sensor and Jeep has been starting fine ever since. When starting spins faster than previously. So Far so good. Mechanic trusted information from diagnostic equipment more than previous experience from others.

Thanks Again.

The collective experience provided by the members on this list is one the greatest diagnostic tools you will ever find when it comes to diagnosing problems on these very unique Jeep CRD's! :5SHOTS:

Hey, I'd be concerned if you told us that he'd swapped parts based on an internet diagnosis. Your mechanic did right to diagnose it himself. This forum is a great resource for DIY repairs but if a dealership mechanic needs to come here for help he's got problems.
